Sony eliminated nearly 300 jobs at Bungie this June following a lackluster response to its latest game, Marathon. Far from a bad experience, the firings pointed to yet another troubling sign in the games industry in 2026. Now, after fan outcry over the potential halt of projects related to its other major IP, Destiny, two leads at the studio are offering promising updates on their future. Here’s a recap of what Bungie shared about its next chapter.

In an update on the Bungie blog, Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon, published a lengthy post about the studio. Overall, the tone was incredibly heartfelt for a corporate blog post. Given the last few months Bungie has had, and really dating back to Sony’s acquisition of the team, it’s been a rough road for the Bungie staff. Most notably, the two leaders shared that Destiny is far from over. The two wrote, “We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special.”

This doesn’t happen without Sony’s blessing, which is sort of surprising given how much of the team was gutted in layoffs earlier this year. In the meantime, support for Marathon continues, and another Destiny-related project is starting. Bungie is planning to bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game. Much of the vaulted content was shelved due to technical restraints, but bringing it back is likely an attempt to gauge player interest before committing heavily to another full-fledged Destiny release.

The best way to jump into Destiny 2 ahead of the re-release of some of its old content is the Destiny 2 Legacy Collection. It’s currently priced at $69.99 USD, but a sale might hit around the release of some of this content. It offers access to all Destiny 2 releases since its inception. The original Destiny has a similar collection-style copy you can purchase for $19.99 USD. You can find both on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC storefronts.
