I don’t know about you, but after a while I get tired of algorithms. This is probably an “old man shakes fist at cloud” moment, but when I was younger, we got recommendations of games from friends, magazines, Blockbuster (RIP), and people who knew what they were talking about. Now, Steam, Twitter, Epic – all of these platforms just spit out what they think we might want to play. Here’s where a cool “new” idea comes in.

Technically, Slow Game Club isn’t new; it was a hit last year and sold out in terms of memberships, offering games such as Thank Goodness You’re Here, Promise Mascot Agency, and despelote. Here is the general idea and what the press release says about Slow Game Club’s goal:

“Steam saw 19,112 game releases in 2025. Almost half attracted fewer than ten user reviews. Brilliant games are slipping through the cracks, and players are drowning in choice.

In a 2024 study of streaming TV subscribers, 51% said the sheer number of algorithmic recommendations they get is overwhelming.

Slow Game Club is the antidote. No endless libraries, no recommendation engines[,] and no algorithm deciding what you should play. Just twelve games, one a month, hand-picked by people who love games and want you to discover something extraordinary.

Between them, the collection went on to include a BAFTA British Game winner, a BAFTA Game Beyond Entertainment winner, an Australian Game Developer Awards Game of the Year winner[,] and an Indie Game Awards Best Debut winner.

We picked almost all of these before they were even nominated. We don’t claim to predict awards. We just know a good game when we see one.

And the members agree. In a survey of 327 members, 87% said Slow Game Club offered great value for money. The most common reason for joining? Discovering games they would never have found on their own.”

In 2027, Slow Game Club is returning with a new theme – Stories only games could tell – with twelve games all released in 2026. The first announced game is Esoteric Ebb, a narrative-rich CRPG that I’ve had my eye on for a while now.

Slow Game Club isn’t just picking games regurgitated to you from some computer. In fact, Promise Mascot Agency (from the 2025 set) comes from Kaizen Game Works, the developers of one of my favorite hidden indie gems: Paradise Killer.

You’re probably wondering, though, what does Slow Game Club and its organizers get out of you joining? Well, 100% of the proceeds go to Into Games, a UK-based charity whose sole focus is (according to the press release) “helping young people from low-income backgrounds access careers in games.”

As previously mentioned, 100% of proceeds support its charitable work, including free game clubs, careers festivals and internships. It is a wonderful group to support, and all for £49/€59/$59 launch pricing. Just one AAA game goes for that price these days, so support charity and get 12 great indies, one per month in 2027.

In addition to each game, you get an exclusive live podcast and Q&A with the developers of each game, access to a members-only Discord server, and you can get a merch box with some pretty cool surprises. Go check out their official site here to sign up for more details.

As a lover of indie games and encouraging kids to get into games for the survival of the industry, I think this is a wonderful thing. I intend to cover Slow Game Club more in 2027, and if possible, Phenixx Gaming will continue to follow their work beyond the 2027 release.
