It has been a while since we spoke about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, mostly because writing “S.T.A.L.K.E.R.” takes longer than it should. Jokes aside, the open-world FPS survival horror-ish post-apocalyptic title was released almost two years ago now, but developer GSC Game World has been working on something I forgot was announced in March. The “Cost of Hope” expansion has finally got a release date, and of course it is before GTA VI… because apparently there is an unwritten rule about these things.

“GSC Game World [Monday, the 27th of July] announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, the first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on August 20, 2026,” notes the press release. What I find interesting is the phrasing, “the first major expansion.” More on the horizon, I see. The short press release continues talking about the expansion:
“The longstanding conflict between the Zone’s leading factions — Duty and Freedom — takes a dramatic turn. As tensions rise and the fragile peace between them begins to unravel, the fate of the Zone hangs in the balance.

In Cost of Hope, players once again step into the role of Skif — the protagonist of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl — as a mysterious PDA signal draws him into events unfolding alongside the main game’s story. Explore uncharted locations, encounter unexpected allies and enemies, discover powerful weapons, and experience a gripping new story. With dozens of hours of content, your choices will shape the future of the Zone in this major new chapter of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. saga.”
Speaking about the launch, the press release repeats the release date as well as something for everyone: “Launching in line with Cost of Hope on August 20, GSC will also release the massive Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Alongside the upgrade to a new version of Unreal Engine 5, the update will bring a variety of new content and improvements. It will be available free of charge to all owners of the game. In the coming weeks, GSC will share more on both Cost of Hope and Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Stay tuned to official channels for more news.”

Of course, as an expansion, you do need the base game of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, which might seem odd to point out to some, but the original three games were separate with this similar style of title change. Plus, there are always people who don’t understand some things known as common sense.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope will be releasing on August 20th, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. You can wishlist the expansion on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store for PC and Xbox Series X|S, and of course, the PlayStation Store for PS5. No word yet on the price of the expansion, though, as the press release does note; we’ll get those details as well as details on the 2.0 update for all in the coming weeks.
