Finally, a witchy school thing that isn’t covered in astroturfing (with an E) or whatever 3G is. For what feels like a lifetime now, many of us have had Chucklefish and Robtotality’s Witchbrook on wishlists, some (myself) because pretty games are my jam (chocolate spread?) or because it is a magic school life-sim that doesn’t have some stink about it. Well, announced yesterday during one of Nintendo’s “hey, we’re doing a showcase that ruins everyone’s schedule, and we’re doing it tomorrow morning,” otherwise known as an Indie World Direct, we now know when Witchbrook releases next year.

“Chucklefish is pleased to announce that their highly-anticipated magic life-sim Witchbrook will be launching January 28th, 2027. The release date announcement of their fourth in-house title, with co-development support from Robotality, was accompanied by an all-new gameplay trailer, revealed during [yesterday]’s Nintendo Indie World.
Also newly revealed is the addition of a PlayStation 5 port, joining the already announced console roster of Nintendo Switch and XBOX. Whether you’re studying spells from the comfort of a handheld or settling in for a session on the big screen, Witchbrook will be waiting for players across PC, Nintendo Switch & Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5 on January 28th, 2027,” as the press release from yesterday noted.

Going a bit further into what to expect from Witchbrook, linking to a couple of dev blogs the team did on Steam, the press release continues: “Witchbrook invites players to enrol as a witch-in-training at Witchbrook College, in the bustling seaside town of Mossport. Attend classes and complete assignments in Alchemy, Astrology, Tarot, Rituals, and more as you expand your magical knowledge, study hard to pass exams, and unlock spells on your path to graduation.
Between lessons, forge friendships and find romance among a colourful cast of characters, start your own witch business helping the local community, or spend your time taking it easy! Join a club, attend seasonal events, go birdwatching, bug-catching, fishing[,] and more! Renovate your cosy woodland cottage and garden, and customise your witch. Additionally, all of this and more can be experienced with up to 4 players in online multiplayer!” So all the things you expect with a life sim game that is a bit witchy and set in a school.

Speaking more about the trailer (embedded below) that came with the announcement, the press release notes: “In the all-new trailer, players can sneak a peek at life as a Witchbrook student: attending classes, spellcasting, studying hard, sitting exams, and putting their newfound knowledge to work. There’s library browsing, salve and potion-making, tarot readings, and a first look at just some of Witchbrook’s magical creatures. Just a taste of the magic and mystery that awaits this January.”
As you might have guessed, I’m excited for Witchbrook. As alluded to before, Witchbrook has been on my wishlist for years, at least since January 2023. The press release does note that the game will be available in “English, French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese” at launch. Also, as noted above, Witchbrook will be available for PC, Nintendo Switch (1 & 2), Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5, with Witchbrook available day one via Xbox Game Pass. Witchbrook will release for $24.99, with a note: “Regional pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.”
