Dispatch is hands-down one of my favorite gaming experiences in recent years. Over 8 episodes, the game revives the Telltale-style, decision-based narrative experience we’ve craved since the studio’s hiatus. As developer AdHoc Studio looks to its next project, they’re taking one more moment to soak in the success of their superhero tale. Good timing, too: the game is celebrating one year on storefronts and a huge sales milestone. Here’s the full rundown of the new 1-year anniversary features coming to Dispatch Deluxe Edition.

If you don’t own the Deluxe Edition, you’ll want to pick it up to enjoy these new additions. Players can upgrade for $10.99 USD to get a digital art book and four digital comics. It’s currently 20% off on Steam and Xbox, so there’s never been a better time to upgrade, especially with new additions to the Deluxe Edition celebrating the game’s 1-year anniversary. Firstly, AdHoc has added 16 hours of commentary for the episodes. Aaron Paul, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, and more of the cast, plus the people who wrote, directed, and designed the game, make up two separate commentary settings for cast and crew. It’s a behind-the-scenes look we don’t get often anymore.
Speaking of behind-the-scenes, Deluxe Edition owners can also play all of Dispatch the way it was first drawn. Every episode, start to finish, is now available in the original storyboard animatics, so you can see how the scenes and characters were designed before a single frame was animated. I can’t recall this being an option in other games, and it immediately piqued my interest from an animation (and art nerd) perspective. While it might not seem as tempting since it’s not the final product so many players know and love, it is a great way to appreciate the vision that it takes to pull off a game like this.

While we still don’t have confirmation of a Dispatch Season 2, it’s encouraging that the studio is still offering new ways to bring players into this incredible debut. Reports suggest the team is eager to build on its foundation from the first game, and players want it too. The studio shared in its 1-year anniversary blog that 5 million players have purchased the game. That’s huge for a game like this, and with few narrative-driven games in the Telltale style releasing recently, I think this has a place in the current indie scene. Despite Telltale making a second go at it with The Wolf Among Us Remastered, they’re likely not doing anything on this level any time soon.
