Monday, Town of Tinysville is another in the deck-based city builder boom, and Poker Night at the Inventory got a new update. Tuesday, Farm to Table got another early access update for the farming/restruant sim, and you couldn’t beat my excitement for FM27 down with a hammer. Wednesday, despite being October, Humble Choice was a lot fairer this month than Epic or Prime/Luna, DREADMOOR got a new demo, and Warhammer Survivors got a release date. Because everything needs a Survivors-like, apparently. Thursday, Stupid Never Dies got a deep dive about its music.
On to the Epic Games Store, and we’re once again going back to three separate offerings this week. We’ll start as the month means to go on because we do one themed month a year: Out of Sight. Released last May and developed by The Gang Studio, it is one of those child-in-a-horror-adventure-setting games that is, quite honestly, not too dissimilar to Tarsier Studio’s Little Nightmares. With a camera a bit closer than the typical far-off side-scrolling thing with a more generic Disney-ish art style, there’s nothing bad about Out of Sight; it is just forgettable.
On mobile this week, you can pick up a much more colorful adventure thing that has previously been available on PC. Released in 2021 and developed by Mighty Yell, The Big Con sees you play as a teen con artist in the 90s consumerist hell, America. I’ll admit, the biggest selling point of The Big Con is its Rugrats opening-title-style color palette, best described as “What color do you want? Yes.” Otherwise, it is a fine comedy-centered adventure game with nostalgia for the 90s.
This week’s non-horror PC offering in October is Bitfall Studios’ TerraScape. Last week I said my comparison would have been Islanders or Combolands, but truth be told, TerraScape is very much of its own vein in the puzzle kingdom builder genre. It presents a bit more like a grand strategy when looking from the outside, with its progression tree and how the kingdom that you grow flourishes, but it has a sort of Dorfromantik quality to it as well. A very intriguing offering for city/kingdom builder fans.
All this week, you can pick up Out of Sight, TerraScape, and The Big Con on the Epic Games Store until the 15th of October, with the latter only available on mobile. Onto next week, and let’s not pretend to be surprised we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel for horror games. Inspired by Steamboat Willie and Fleischer films, Bad Cheese is an overly long Rick and Morty bit that tries too hard to make you feel disgusting. For the non-horror offering, though, we have 80s spy films and Art Deco design in Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise.
