I’ve covered a fair bit of Destiny 2 content updates in the past. The general discourse around the game seemed somewhat positive, and as far as live service goes, the game certainly was successful. However, this week came a surprising announcement from Bungie. After launching in 2017 and about nine years of constant updates, Destiny 2 will receive its final piece of content on June 9th, 2026, though the game will remain playable for the foreseeable future.

As part of their official comments on the matter, Bungie stated, “As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.” I would hope this means the studio has another project in the works, but whether that is another entry in the Destiny series or something entirely new remains unclear. In IGN’s report on this subject, they cite Bungie’s financial earnings as a contributing factor, bringing attention to the underperformance of recent Destiny 2 expansions and the commercial failure of Marathon, the newest shooter released by Bungie this year. While both of these titles still certainly make a good amount of revenue, it isn’t enough to meet parent company Sony’s expectations.

I find it unfortunate to see Destiny go, as it was an IP that was a lot more interesting than Marathon, at least in my eyes. In terms of the final content update itself, players can expect the Monument of Triumph, an in-game celebration event, to bestow a large variety of free loot by completing certain objectives. A new Pantheon featuring a large gauntlet of bosses will be a permanent addition to the game, and new bosses will be added over the course of three weeks, ending on June 16th.

Additionally, all raids and Dungeon rewards will be updated to make them more worthwhile. Weekly raids will also remain active. Sandbox mode will feature new abilities and rebalancing of existing ones, while PVP will receive three new game types dubbed Arena, Glass Cannon, and Software, respectively. However, seasonal events will be retired permanently. Finally, the storefront and premium currency will remain active for purchases, while all the previous content packs will be bundled into a special collection that will be available on June 9th and offered as the default game going forward. Destiny 2 is available now for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
