Get me my platform shoes and spangly jacket; it is time to disco! Announced as far back as 2023, RetroSpace is a first-person space horror DiscoPunk action game I only found out about in June. Yes, one might surmise that perhaps there is an influence from System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex, to name a few. Well, as announced yesterday via press release and announcement video, RetroSpace finally got a release date.

UK publisher Kwalee and independent studio The Wild Gentlemen are pleased to announce that RetroSpace is coming to PC and consoles this October. The game will launch on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1, 2026,” notes the press release. Indeed, developed by the same people who made Chicken Police and the developer of the upcoming turn-based tactics game, WILD Tactics.

The press release then uses the blurb on Steam: “RetroSpace is a disco-punk space horror where you can be a sneaky chap or a mutant action hero as you try to survive on a space station swallowed by a black hole. A mind-bending ride with weird creatures, immersive features, time jumps, and ’70s mustaches!” The latter of those is the scariest of all monsters. The press release basically goes into a list of paragraphs talking about the game from there:

IMMERSIVE DISCO-PUNK SPACE-HORROR! – You were but a simple janitor[;] now you are the last hope of all humanity! A space station has been swallowed by a sentient black hole, weird animal and plant hybrids roam the corridors, and even time itself has gone completely mad around you. Navigate with stealth or unleash a blast-tastic odyssey through the cursed station. Will you be the hero Earth needs, or are you groovin’ to save your own soul? The choice is yours!

SURVIVING AURORA 5 – The enemies on the station of Aurora 5 are completely different from each other, so you’ve gotta channel your inner mad scientist to outsmart ’em. Survival ain’t just luck; it’s about cracking the code on their behavior, special abilities, and weaknesses. You will also have to deal with a variety of environmental factors. Security systems – for example – can be extremely deadly unless you find a way and turn them into traps or even unlikely allies…

STEALTH VS ACTION – Don’t like conflicts? Would you rather hide in the dark or find a way around your enemy? Or are you the kind who goes completely mental and attacks your opponent with its own flaming body part? The choice is yours, janitor! RetroSpace allows you to solve situations in many different ways. Total avoidance is as legit as a diversion, trap setting, or full-on “balls-to-the-wall” action.

THE STATION – Aurora 5 is a massively interconnected and open station that you are free to explore. As you discover new and new areas [sic], shortcuts, and secret paths will open up to previously visited locations. This can be accessed through a (mostly) peaceful central HUB area, where you can return anytime when you can’t take the madness and horror any longer.

MUTAMODS, DEATH, AND REBIRTH – Mutamods™ can make your life much easier and enhance your combat and stealth skills. Want to become a tentacle-armed, mind-controlling, shadow-lurking mutant madman? Be our guest. BUT [BEWARE]! Mutamods™ may have unexpected and irreversible side effects…

Death will be integral to your journey, but don’t worry! Aurora can produce an infinite number of clones of you. But here’s the hitch – cloning ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. You should be prepared for some severe cloning degenerations, and of course, it is highly recommended to get your stuff back from your former self. (and always carry a mustache! – thank us later) Get ready for a wild ride through the psychedelic unknown, where every death is just another funky twist in your interstellar journey!”

Going back a touch, one might assume “As you discover new and new areas” was meant to be “As you discover new weapons and new areas,” though we’re not entirely sure. Either way, someone got a priapism hearing all of that as they sit in front of their System Shock 2 posters, swearing at Ken Levine on Twitter to hurry up with Judas.

As I say, when I first saw RetroSpace a couple of months ago, it certainly went straight onto my wishlist. Though then it was more of a TBA release than a set October 1st. As the press release notes, RetroSpace will release concurrently across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam on October 1st. Just a quick six weeks. No word yet on the release price exactly, though responding to a comment on the Steam post announcing a dev said, “Nowhere near $50, not even $30.”
