I’m a long-time fan of the work Fantagraphics is doing to preserve Disney Comics of the 20th century. Its newest collection, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers: Scheme the Impossible Dream: Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 7, continues the task of bringing some of the most memorable characters from the Disney Adventures and early Disney Channel days to life in comics many of us may have missed in the 80s or 90s.

From favorites released in the 80s and 90s to adventures never before released in the United States, Fantagraphics has cultivated a great list of stories from some of Disney Afternoon‘s best. Featured on the covers and headlining this publication is a wonderful tale from Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers titled “Scheme the Impossible Dream.” For those of us who grew up watching these shows and have a strong dose of nostalgia every time the theme song reenters our brain, these comics are a treat. For those with young ones in the house or in their lives, these can also be a great way to expose them to some of the strongest comics Disney ever released.
If you haven’t picked up a Fantagraphics collection before, the construction of these books alone is worth the purchase even before you open to page one. With a gorgeous hardback cover and vibrant pages, these are some of my favorite focal points of my bookshelf. Across 208 pages of fun with characters from Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, TaleSpin, and more, I’m always itching for another collection the minute I get my hands on a new publication. This is the seventh entry in the Disney Afternoon Adventures volumes, with other entries providing Gummy Bears and others the cover spotlight.

While Fantagraphics publishes several Disney Comics from the 20th century, this line, in particular, appeals to me because of the titles it features. We have a lot of Mickey Mouse media, and even my favorite, Winnie the Pooh, gets tons of love. We don’t necessarily see many projects in 2026 return to the Disney Afternoon gang, despite the gang being a massive hit in the 80s and 90s. At one time, an entire part of Disneyland was taken over by these characters. Now? Apart from one Chip n’ Dale movie a few years back, we don’t see them often.
That’s why returning to these shows and characters in the Disney Afternoon Adventures volumes feels so special to me. In particular, the Disney Adventures magazine, which ran from 1990-2007, was a mainstay for me and my gateway into the world of magazines. There are still plenty of Disney books for kids today, but the liveliness of these color palettes feels like time capsules to another time for the House of Mouse altogether. Across Fantagraphics’ library of releases, the work to preserve these works is unmatched, but as a Disney fanatic, I’m partial to just how much I love cracking open a new collection of these characters. Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers: Scheme the Impossible Dream: Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 7 will be available for purchase on September 29, 2026, via Fantagraphics. Let us know in the comments if you have a favorite show or character from the Disney Afternoon days!
