In 2013, The Wolf Among Us arrived at the heart of Telltale’s power. Now, more than 13 years later, Telltale is very different. After a brief closure and bankruptcy in 2018, the studio reemerged and has since been largely dormant. Luckily for us, their grand return is one of their best projects and a triumph of narrative-driven game design. While it’s great to head back into Fabletown, some elements of this remaster feel underwhelming given the wait. Here’s our review for The Wolf Among Us Remastered, played on Xbox Series X.

In The Wolf Among Us Remastered, you play as Sheriff Bigby Wolf. Adapted from the Bill Willingham graphic novel series Fables, you’re essentially the big bad wolf attempting to keep Fabletown from falling apart. In noir fashion, you’re seeking the solution to a murder. With clues, plenty of characters to question and suss out, your playthrough largely depends on player choices. In pure Telltale fashion, the player shapes their journey, and it’s wonderful to revisit the overarching story at the heart of this fairytale mystery.

I haven’t played The Wolf Among Us recently and haven’t touched it since 2013’s original release. What I’ll say about The Wolf Among Us Remastered is that to untrained or unaware eyes, this game isn’t the graphical overhaul I assumed it would be. While textures, colors, and visuals are improved, they don’t feel 2026. It’s not a detriment to the art style either; I particularly like The Wolf Among Us’ line-heavy design. It feels straight out of a graphic novel.

My concern is that, despite being a remaster, I sort of balked at the idea that I was playing a version different from the 2013 release. I went back and looked at comparisons, and I see the attention to detail poured into the remaster. That said, it’s not evident to fresh eyes. The controls are similarly stuck in a decade ago, with choppy movements that feel quite outdated. All in all, players who don’t love the original might be a bit taken aback by how it feels and looks.

So, is it still worth revisiting? Absolutely. This is a great story, and there are some great behind-the-scenes features. 60 minutes of behind-the-scenes clips and an art gallery give you insight into the game’s development. There are also five deleted scenes. The biggest addition, though largely unimpactful, is Noir Mode, which lets you play the game in black and white. Still, the visual upgrades felt slightly underwhelming to me without a direct comparison to how much detail was added for the remaster.

Across 5 episodes, The Wolf Among Us Remastered is one of Telltale’s finest games. There’s a lot to love about this decorated studio’s return, in whatever form it takes today. While the remaster doesn’t necessarily feel modern, it’s a great step forward for the dev team, hopefully leading to a sequel or another project in the near future. At $25, it’s still worth your time and money, and eligible owners of the original digital game can receive up to 50% off depending on the platform. Learn more about the price discounts here.
