However, when a title comes out that I find genuinely interesting in a genre I enjoy, I feel it’s important to bring attention to the game to wider audiences. Yami Kids is a brand-new retro-style monster-catching JRPG that is available now on Steam for $13.99. The game is developed by Yanako RPGs, who previously worked on Dokimon Quest, another retro monster-taming game.

Whereas Dokimon is a lot more Pokémon-adjacent, Yami Kids is certainly leaning more into the dark mysticism from the original Yu-Gi-Oh series or Atlas titles like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. The basic premise follows two orphans who grow up on the streets of a vast city and struggle to survive against a mysterious organization hunting their bloodline. Utilizing contracts with various Oni demons, players will engage in Shadow Duels against foes. However, losing a duel in-game doesn’t simply send you back to the nearest checkpoint, but will instead result in a trip to the underworld. To escape, you will then be forced to make a deal or complete a special task. It’s stated that whatever choices you make during this quest to return to the realm of the living will continue to impact your journey through the story from then on.

Yami Kids is set to feature 80+ collectible Onis for you to customize your squad with. The story will offer various opportunities to explore both the main overworld as well as the mysterious underworld. Battles in Yami Kids look to be very much along the lines of your classic turn-based fare.
