A lot of talk in the Activision Blizzard acquisition indicated that Xbox was really landing a huge asset in the Call of Duty developer and publisher. In reality, we might have overlooked the influence and power of the Blizzard name, which we likely underestimate in 2026 given its mainstay stature in the gaming world. Yes, World of Warcraft and Diablo are regularly updated franchises worthy of accolades, but in an Xbox portfolio that’s floundering, they’re also likely helping keep things afloat in a way we don’t appreciate. That’s true at least according to a new letter from the president of Blizzard.

Windows Central got hold of a letter from Blizzard president Johanna Faries that was drafted for the staff of the studio. In the letter, Faries shares that “In FY26 Blizzard ended the year as the top-performing studio in Xbox’s studios division, and this past year has marked our third highest fiscal for top line revenue in Blizzard’s history.” The third-highest fiscal year for Blizzard’s history being in 2026 shocked me, to be honest. Sure, the studio is continuously putting out content for its players, but it feels like the franchises central to its work are past their limelight. I guess that’s not the case, and I’m sure Xbox is glad for it.

Overwatch saw a huge resurgence in players last year, and Diablo 4 continues to put out great post-launch content. Of course, the MMORPG-shaped elephant in the room is always World of Warcraft, which continues to draw in players by its name alone, and keep long-time fans happy as they spend more time and money in a world that feels as second-nature to them now as the real one.

If we see Xbox’s great reset take shape, I think we’ll really get a good idea of Blizzard’s prowess by how front-and-center they are in marketing and game releases. I would think Asha Sharma knows what she has in Activision, but the Blizzard portfolio might well be the part of that acquisition that really makes the deal worth it in the long run.
