I think I’ve made it somewhat clear that I enjoy exploration, nature, a bit of photography, and maybe something about cars. If you somehow missed it, Funselektor Labs almost exclusively makes games about the latter. However, with the partnership for the historical open-wheel racing management game Golden Lap from co-developer Strelka Games, the studio has been working on something a bit different. Over The Hill is a 1-4 player 4×4 exploration game with 60s-80s off-roaders on the less-paved highways. It is something I’ve been excited for (since it was announced), and after a year and a half, Over The Hill has a release date.

Indie developers Funselektor and Strelka Games announced that Over The Hill, the upcoming 1-4 player off-road exploration game from the developer of Art of Rally, will arrive on Steam [on] October 14[th]. Console versions for PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions will also follow in 2027.

Following a recent demo on Steam, which saw over 500,000 players take to the trails together, Over The Hill now sits at over 1,200,000 Wishlists on Steam, making it one of the platform’s most anticipated indie titles of the year,” notes the press release. If I can go on a slight digression, I am happy that we’re getting an announcement two months ahead of release, not two weeks or even just two days before. I moan about this a lot; I hate that so much.

The press release goes on to talk about the game and its key features: “Explore, navigate, and uncover a vast wilderness in Over The Hill, the newest game from the creator of Art of Rally. Pick a ride inspired by classic 4×4 overlanders from 1960-1980s and ramble your way through biomes based on real-world locations.

  • Go Off the Beaten Path – Take to the trails solo or with up to three friends. Cruise scenic landscapes, tackle challenging off-road routes, and work together to overcome obstacles using planks, winches, and other equipment. Plan carefully or improvise on the spot.
  • A World Worth Discovering – Explore forests, lakesides, and mountains while uncovering remote cabins, scenic viewpoints, natural landmarks, meteorites, and portals to new areas. Watch for dynamic weather and day/night cycles that can transform the environment and your journey.
  • Capture the Moment – Spot native wildlife and use the in-game camera to fill your compendium, or capture awe-inspiring landscapes and make your own memorable moments.

  • Make Your Vehicle Your Own – Find upgrades and equipment in the world, then stop at merchants and cabins to customize your vehicle with colours, accessories, and cosmetics to match your driving style.
  • It’s About the Journey – Take your time and find your own way. The best stories never start at the end.

Over The Hill will be releasing on Steam on October 14th, with console versions set to release sometime in 2027. No word on the price just yet. We do know, however, that like most games on Steam, the soundtrack for Over The Hill will also be available separately as DLC upon release. I’m excited to see more of Over The Hill and get hands-on with Funselektor and Strelka Games’ next collaboration.
