Bitmap Books, an essential name in video game history and book publishing, recently released a new compendium: Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History. Beginning in 1991, this fighting series might not have the mainstream love you see in the Tekken and Street Fighter fandoms, but make no mistake: this is a franchise we owe much to when considering the makeup of the fighting game genre. I had a chance to read through it, and I think fighting game fans and video game aficionados in general will love the story being told here.

The NEOGEO was truly a transformative step in bringing arcade-style games into the home. No game cemented the console as a competitive player in the home market like Fatal Fury. In the new book from Bitmap, developers and artists share their insights into the unique development of Fatal Fury. Hearing from the artists in particular, and seeing the art in gorgeous quality, really makes the game feel alive on paper or in digital format.
There’s a really great connection and through-line explored in the book, including KOF and Art of Fighting. Across every entry in the mainline Fatal Fury series, the people behind the games offer insight into their inspirations and how they see their output influencing other projects afterward. At least to me, as a relatively casual fighting game player, I don’t think Fatal Fury much crosses my mind when I’m in the mood to play the genre. That said, the book has changed that by giving me an insight into the love and care put into these titles.

The book continues to explore all the way up until the most recent 2025 release in the franchise, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. That game, if you remember, won Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2025. It currently sits at 84% recommended on OpenCritic as well, which is a masterful feat considering just how long this series has run. The book gave me hope that we will see 35 more years of Fatal Fury games.
If the book inspires you, I’m happy to see that many of the featured games are available as ACA NEOGEO titles on the Nintendo Switch. All are offered at around $8 USD, and you can even play Fatal Fury Special, a Super Nintendo release, on Nintendo Switch Online as of October 2025. I’ve got the itch to do some deeper dives after this book, thanks to the heartfelt stories and input from its creators. Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History is available now in both a Standard Edition and Collector’s Edition from Bitmap Books.
