Last week, Nintendo unveiled what’s next for the beloved Star Fox series. Unfortunately for fans, it’s not anything brand new. The roughly 20-minute Star Fox direct video focused on the newest title coming to Nintendo Switch 2, simply dubbed Star Fox. This game is a remake of the classic Star Fox 64 title, yet again with admittedly more polish than ever before. Star Fox features completely new HD graphics with a realistic art style that is certainly a switch-up for the series. Furthermore, the game will also feature new cutscenes and dialogue between characters in order to expand the story.

The campaign will feature three main difficulty modes. However, diving into the game’s challenge mode will not only allow you to replay levels with special objectives but also unlock Expert difficulty. Another new feature to the game comes with multiplayer functionality in the form of Battle Mode. Here, you take on the role of either team Star Fox or Star Wolf, and compete against each other to collect points by completing various objectives, which change depending on the map. This mode can be played either locally or online. Additionally, the mode is compatible with the new GameShare feature offered by the Switch 2, allowing you to play with others who don’t own the game.

The new Star Fox will offer more controller support in addition to the default Joy-Con controls. Players can use the Switch N64 controller to relive the classic experience or use the mouse controls offered by the Switch 2 for precise aiming. Utilizing this control scheme also allows for local multiplayer in the campaign, as one person can use mouse controls to take over the guns while the other handles movement using the second Joy-Con. I can’t imagine anyone using this option, but it’s nice to see local multiplayer still being considered these days.

Nintendo has stated that the title is meant to be a great jumping-on point for new players while also giving long-time fans something new to appreciate. Hopefully, if this release does well, we can see more from the series in the future. Star Fox releases exclusively for the Switch 2 on June 25th.
