After Theater Round-Up: July and August

July & August were monumental months for the world of movies! So many great behemoths and sleeper hits have graced the silver screen that there are a lot of great choices to spend your hard-earned money on. Here are my personal picks for the best movies that came out in July & August!

Coyote vs ACME

It has been a long road for Coyote vs ACME to get on the big screen, but it is finally here! This film shows that the Looney Tunes still have a place in the world of entertainment, even if their current parents at Warner Brothers don’t feel the same way. The blending of live action and animation is something that we rarely see these days, but I am so glad that this movie wasn’t shelved and that I can show this film to my children one day!

The Rivals of Amziah King

Matthew McCaughney is a movie star who leaves a lasting impression everywhere he goes. When I first saw the trailer for this film, I was shocked that there wasn’t more buzz circling around about it. Even finding a theater that showed it was a bit difficult, but I am so glad that I got a ticket. This is a heartwarming story about finding family in the most unusual of places and the lengths that one could go to defend the legacy of that family!

The Wrong Girls

To the non-stoners of the world, this movie is one that many of you likely wrote off instantly. As a self-annointed diplomat between the non-stoners and stoners of the world, I ask that everyone give this movie a chance. Is it your run-of-the-mill comedy? Not exactly, but it is quite amusing and absolutely charming! This film sets up so many tropes and executes them all in a way that will keep a grin on your face.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

If there is a cure for the male loneliness epidemic, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is at least the first dose of medicine. Tom Holland has officially broken the Spider-Man barrier by having a fourth titular film featuring the world’s favorite webslinger! This movie is a great follow-up to No Way Home and puts everything on the line to capture the minds of those who see it.

The Odyssey

Of all the epics to cram into a roughly three-hour window, The Odyssey is not the easiest to accomplish. The fact that Christopher Nolan has done it proves that he is still capable of the impossible. From a stellar cast to great visuals, there is something for everyone in The Odyssey! It is not a completely faithful adaptation to the original, but I believe that the ancient Greeks would be quite impressed by this new representation of the oral classic.

The Invite

A film that was not on my radar was The Invite. I don’t remember what prompted me to go see it, but I am very glad I did since it is a surprisingly sharp movie. With a majority of the story taking place in a single apartment and very little happening compared to what most audiences are used to visually, this project relies on the script and the actors’ abilities to deliver the lines. This film does a lot of telling with very little showing, yet somehow manages to be a wonderfully chaotic experience!
