Ghost Narrative Game ‘Remaining Grace’ Announced

Some combinations of words sort of catch you off guard, and I’ll be honest, the term ghost narrative is a great example. When developer Ambedo Studios announced its new game, Remaining Grace, the use of ghost narrative to describe this emotional, non-linear story read as purposefully specific. From an alternative history backdrop to creative ways to explore the impact of someone’s life, this game is shaping up to be a head-turner. Here’s the latest on this newly announced game.

In Remaining Grace, players experience the untold ghost story of Grace Tao through the interconnected lives of those she left behind. As you piece together a non-linear mosaic of lives and relationships, and unravel the mystery surrounding Grace’s death across three time periods, a multi-layered tale plays out that’s very much akin to some of the recent emotional journeys games like And Roger or 1000xResist have taken us on. Quintin Pan, Creative Director on the game, shared in the press release that the goal is to “ask pointed and provocative questions.”

The game’s art style is portrayed through a pencil sketch art style. More interestingly, the game’s world of Turtle Island is an alternate-history North America that was never colonized. In this timeline, Christopher Columbus failed in his westward mission, and reimagines a multi-cultural Turtle Island where the ethnic mix of Indigenous and diaspora live under a very different set of cultural norms from our world. Pan added that the game is a product of seeking to explore “our wrestlings with faith, race, gender, and culture all into a complex non-linear narrative tapestry for the player to unfold.”
