For many, the world of K-Pop is just as much about the industry as it is the music. Not to say people are fans of the grueling work that goes into stardom, but there’s something about the spectacle of debuts, solo efforts, and all of the planning that goes into global favorites. If that task of managing a group and all that goes into putting together the next phenomenon has interested you, K-pop Idol Stories: Road to Debut is likely to be a hit for you. If you’re a management sim fan and so-so on K-pop, this might be one to skip.

K-pop Idol Stories: Road to Debut puts you in the manager’s seat as you put together the next great K-pop group. With light story elements that kickstart the process from the get-go, you’re set to manage everything from who is in the group, their training regimen, and even the diet they follow. For an industry that’s relatively intense, the game experience is quite cozy. There are some light dating sim-like elements to helping each star hit their peak, and plenty of great characters.

For management sim experts, the biggest pain point is simply the lack of explainers for the systems you’re managing in the game. A lot of trial and error occurs to make sense of every stat you’re seeking to improve and maintain. Vague choices from time to time can make the outcome of decisions feel a little misguided and underrepresented in terms of their implications, but it’s not enough to make the game feel unfair or stacked against you.

Getting to make choices like skimping on healthier food to save cash for dance training or outfits is a fun way to put the player’s goals at the heart of the experience. It’s also worth noting that the writing of most characters in K-pop Idol Stories: Road to Debut is diverse enough to make them feel like unique individuals and fun enough to encourage you to mix up the personality types you’re recruiting.

Spending enough time replaying the game’s 5-7 hour experience can lead to you feeling like you’re lacking the depth that can really make a management sim game sink its claws into you, but that’s not necessarily what I need from every management sim. The art in K-pop Idol Stories: Road to Debut, along with the writing, makes it feel like what I’d want if I was a massive K-pop fan. Another go at this project in a sequel could help to build on the strengths of K-pop Idol Stories and offer even more variation in the ways that you take a group of individuals and make them a cohesive powerhouse.

At its very fair price point, I feel like K-pop fans should pick this one up easily. For non-K-pop fans, I’d imagine there are going to be some frustrations in terms of the overall management sim elements that don’t make this an all-timer for you. That said, as someone who loves this genre, I feel very happy with the time I spent in this world, and felt real responsibility for the characters I recruited and managed. It’s a well-done game that would really benefit from more depth in its next entry, if we get one. I’m hoping we do.
