I’ve been following the development of 1666: Amsterdam pretty closely since it was revealed at Summer Game Fest. I played the Prologue Demo, and I have been talking to friends and family about how excited I am for it.
This week, the developers at Panache Digital released a new devlog about 1666: Amsterdam. This second entry in their devlog series discusses the art style, as well as crafting three timelines for the game’s story. Here is what the press release says about the devlog.

“In case you missed it, Panache Digital Games has released Developer Diary #2 for 1666: Amsterdam, offering players a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic vision behind the upcoming story-led action-adventure from creative director Patrice Désilets.
This latest episode explores how the team drew inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age, translating centuries-old paintings and historical research into the game’s distinctive visual identity across its three timelines.”

Each era has a different feeling, from the Dutch Golden Age-inspired 1666 to the more modern, cinematic feeling of the present-day period. It is really interesting how the development team has focused on crafting 3 different atmospheric environments in each era they create. That doesn’t even consider the more supernatural areas that you see.
It was obvious from playing the prologue that 1666: Amsterdam has a very specific focus on art and atmosphere. It almost pulls you into the screen, letting you immerse yourself in the tale that Patrice and his team want to tell. Check out this devlog below. I’m very excited to see what comes next for 1666: Amsterdam. Let us know what you think in the comments below. I can’t wait for the Early Access launch.
