As the first half of the year comes to an end, we have been graced with another wonderful row of movies in theaters. When I began to put this list together, I was worried that it wouldn’t be as good as the first two lists, but I was pleasantly surprised when I looked back. Without further ado, let’s dive into the best films to come to the cinema in May and June of 2026!

The Death of Robin Hood

One of two Hugh Jackman films to grace the screens in this period, The Death of Robin Hood is a unique take on the final days of the legendary outlaw. Unlike most outings over the years that have depicted him as a hero, this retelling embraces the rougher potential of Robin Hood and leans into what can be seen as a more grounded take.

While the trailer boasts what looks to be a lot of combat and brutal killing, that is relegated to the first twenty minutes of The Death of Robin Hood. A majority of this focuses on Robin Hood coming to terms with his past while also taking on roles that he never thought would be possible in his life.

Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg’s latest film, which was shrouded in mystery through cryptic posters at the start, has finally been disclosed to all. A modern-day tale of how humanity would react to the discovery of alien life being real and the lengths that some would go to keep the truth hidden. Disclosure Day takes a lot of bold swings and truly questions how people would react if they learned the truth. It is certainly not the best movie of Spielberg’s; however, it is one that I believe will be talked about for many years to come.

Backrooms

We’ve been on a string of great horror films helmed by content creators this year, starting with Iron Lung and continuing with Obsession and Kane Parsons’ Backrooms. For myself, Backrooms is absolutely phenomenal. It is an atmospheric horror first, which means that if you don’t buy into the concept of it early on, you probably aren’t going to like it. I will admit that there were a few scenes that got me, which annoyed some of my fellow moviegoers, but that’s why I typically don’t watch horror movies in public.

Obsession

Continuing the trend of content creators breaking down the walls of Hollywood, Obsession is set to become a horror classic. Nowhere on social media could people escape the messaging of Obsession and the captivating performance of Inde Navarrette. Obsession is an absolute marvel, especially considering the shoestring budget that they worked with. Between this film, Iron Lung, and Backrooms, 2026 is looking to be the year of Cinematic Horror.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu

Star Wars is finally back on the big screen. The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the adventures of these characters after season 3 of The Mandalorian. While The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t make a splash at the box office and it takes a bit to shake off its streaming show feel, this shows to me that Lucasfilm is heading in the right direction to getting Star Wars back to what it should be after some stumbling caused by The Rise of Skywalker and The Acolyte

The Sheep Detectives

The second helping of Hugh Jackman recently, The Sheep Detectives, is right now my favorite movie of 2026. That is not something that I ever thought would be the case, but The Sheep Detectives is absolutely phenomenal. From quirky characters to deep messages to amusing moments, there were so many brilliant moments in it. While I highly recommend seeing every film on this list, this is a must-see.

Mortal Kombat II

While the first film in this series left much to be desired, this second entry delivers the ultimate Mortal Kombat film for fans. Mortal Kombat II delivers brutal action paired with great world-building and phenomenal character development. The sheer amount of gore and bloodshed is sure to make the weak-stomached a bit queasy, but it is wonderful for fans of the games.

While there are some changes to characters that people may be dismayed about, I found them to be quite brilliant and occasionally hilarious in terms of how relationships evolve. While it didn’t do that well at the box office, I would love to see a third film in order to get more action and see where the story goes from where Mortal Kombat II ends.

That is it for this issue of After Theater Round-Up. Are there any movies that weren’t on this list that you loved in May & June? Leave them in the comments so more people can find them. Remember to check out the previous edition, and we’ll see you next time for July & August.
