The Anima: Beyond Fantasy is a surprisingly interesting tabletop RPG. I started looking into it after playing the Anima I & II Remaster in 2025. Now, it seems that the developer, Anima Project, has a new game on the horizon.
Anima: Song of the Abyss takes Anima: Beyond Fantasy to the next level and will be coming in 2027. This new entry in the franchise will be coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Here is what the press release says about Song of the Abyss:

“Indie studio Anima Project is proud to confirm that Anima: Song from the Abyss is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Set in the Anima: Beyond Fantasy books universe, Song from the Abyss is a third-person Action RPG that mixes a traditional pen and paper role-playing game style with hack & slash action. Control two different characters to explore the secrets hidden within the Abyss, and the enigmatic song tied to a forgotten civilization.

An imperial zeppelin descends into chaos when, without explanation, most of its crew suddenly vanish. With an unknown force stalking the airship, Soren, the last surviving knight guarding the dirigible, fights to protect its dangerous cargo: A powerful relic from a forgotten civilization. But in a desperate attempt to save the vessel, he unknowingly unleashes a catastrophe by freeing a legendary entity imprisoned within the artifact itself.
As the zeppelin crashes into the depths of the mysterious realm known as the Abyss, the enigmatic entity presents herself as Noein and offers the knight a single chance at survival. In return, he must help her uncover the truth behind the song that caused the disappearance of the ancient civilization… and the reason for her eternal imprisonment.

Anima: Song from the Abyss is an Action RPG set in the acclaimed universe of Anima: Beyond Fantasy. Players will control two distinct protagonists while exploring a world filled with secrets, danger, and unforgettable characters. Featuring fast-paced, fluid combat and a deep narrative-driven experience, the game invites players to uncover the mysteries hidden within the Abyss.”
One of my big complaints about the first two games was the lack of characters in the world. There were NPCs, but they were few and far between. It seems the developers have taken this to heart and are changing things up with Song of the Abyss. I’m very curious to see what this new entry does to mix things up, while still expanding the world of Anima: Beyond Fantasy. Hopefully we’ll see more as we get closer to 2027.
