For PC and console gamers, the Xbox controller has been a favorite for over a decade. Its form factor, ergonomics, and familiar design have led Xbox to stray only slightly from its 2013 design with the Xbox One. We were due for a shakeup, and with the rising popularity of portable, multi-platform controllers, the newest Xbox controller is a drastic new design that offers a much-needed first-party alternative in size and cost. Here’s everything you need to know about the Xbox Nano controller.

The Xbox Nano controller will launch at $49.99 USD, cheaper than both its Core and Elite options. The price isn’t the only thing shrinking either. This compact controller keeps the Xbox controller design but is a little over 5 inches long and weighs just 3.5 ounces. Despite the smaller layout, it includes all 18 standard gameplay inputs you find on the Core controller. In its official blog post announcing the controller, Xbox says it envisions this as a great option for “younger players, smaller hands, or anyone seeking something portable for play on the go.”

I’m not young, I don’t have small hands, and I don’t game very often in a manner where portability is a factor, but look, this is a day one pickup for me. With so many controllers on the market now, including the similarly shaped CRKD NEO S, which offers a smaller surface to play games on, this is a wonderful look and move. The rechargeable battery and programmable Action Button are great additions, and the ABYX layout we know and love looks great in this compact form factor.

Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth support should mean this controller works with all Xbox consoles, PCs, and Apple and Android devices. Xbox claims they will also work with “Select Smart TVs,” which I’d love more clarity on. With games like Star Wars Galactic Racer streaming on Amazon Luna, I’m hoping I can connect this directly to my Amazon Fire TV and podrace to my heart’s content.

A few collaborations will help get the Nano into more homes at launch thanks to Xbox partnerships. Samsung TVs will come with a “special” Nano controller and 2 months of Game Pass Ultimate this holiday season. Similarly, Meta Quest devices will also come with the new pint-sized peripheral and 2 months of Ultimate this holiday season. Shipping is anticipated to begin in November. You can preorder the latest Xbox controller now on Microsoft’s website.
