Xbox has announced plans to help gamers convert their physical game libraries into digital ones. As we see the move away from discs in the Sony ecosystem, it’s likely this all-digital future may come for Microsoft as well. While we can’t predict the future, it does appear that the service will be available to XBOX Insiders to begin testing next week on August 31st. As far as details go, here’s what we know so far about the service.

How to Get the Digital Version of Xbox Physical Games

There’s still plenty of detail surrounding Xbox Disc to Digital that we don’t fully know. For example, we don’t have a list of games that will work for the service. We also don’t know details as to how often the digital versions will be verified, if at all, by having to reinsert your disc into a console. It’s fair to have these questions, as well as some skepticism about the service. That said, Xbox seems to have a pretty clear path to turning your physical library into a digital library.

According to Xbox Wire, “players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game.” It sounds really simple, and even some modern features are available with these digital entitlements. Xbox adds that “once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.”

Do All Xbox Games Work for Disk-to-Digital?

As of now, we don’t know what games are included in the Xbox Disk to Digital program. It appears that publishers will have to opt in, meaning games won’t automatically join this new service. Xbox claims the service starts with “thousands of titles” and will continue to add more over time. I’d imagine Gears of War 5 is one of them, given the blog’s featured image, and many other Xbox-owned titles will likely be the first to join the service.
