I’ll admit, I am heavily nostalgic for JRPGs from the PlayStation 1 (or PSX) Era of gaming. There were great games such as Suikoden 1 and 2, Valkyrie Profile, Final Fantasy VII, and so many more. Now, it seems that a new indie RPG inspired by those days is on its way.

Full Circle is a new JRPG announced and developed by Solo-Developer 2ndPlayerGames and Publisher Deck13 Spotlight. It looks to emulate games such as Star Ocean, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and early Suikoden entries. Here is what the press release says about Full Circle’s announcement:

“Solo-Developer 2ndPlayerGames and Publisher Deck13 Spotlight are thrilled to officially reveal Full Circle, their upcoming 2.5HD Indie JRPG based on classics of the PlayStation 1 era of the genre. The game was revealed during the Indie Quest 2026 Showcase and will be playable for the first time later this year at Gamescom.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where mutated beasts roam the planet, where gruesome monsters are threatening everything and everyone, humanity has found shelter and security in flying cities. And yet, the time has come for a return to the surface. Young heroes are raised with a single purpose: brave the wilds and keep humanity’s last refuge alive. But when a mission beyond the walls reveals survivors, rival cities and secrets no one prepared them for, everything they believed in seems to fall apart.

Full Circle is inspired by classics of the PlayStation era. From Lunar to Breath of Fire. From early Final Fantasy games to Legend of Dragoon. The golden era. The games the developer grew up with. With Full Circle, he wants to pay tribute to his childhood, combining the elements he loved as a kid with a modern 2.5HD Pixelart style, fluid gameplay, and modern controls.

The intention is clear: Combine what has been great and was partly lost within the genre over the years with the fluidity of modern games. Staying true to the roots and introducing unique approaches, and spice up the formula with mechanics which couldn’t be realized during the golden era.”

I am very interested in Full Circle. I’m also curious to see how 2ndPlayerGames’ vision unfolds. The Peruvian developer’s goal was to create a soundtrack for a JRPG, and now he has crafted his own. With Full Circle as his Magnum Opus (as he has called it) a lot of hopes are riding on it. I can’t wait to see more as we get closer to Gamescom.
