Metro 2039 Xbox First Look Event Announced

We’re in an era of game development where we can see a series reinvent itself and find a new fanbase that may not have been there in the past. Marathon is thriving for the extraction shooter fans, Overwatch is getting its full-on revitalization, and Xbox has a first-person shooter series returning in a big way. It’s not like Metro: 2033 wasn’t a hit, but it’s not necessarily known as an all-timer. That said, 4A Games and Deep Silver have their eyes on a big return for the franchise with Metro: 2039. We’re going to learn a lot more about the game this week thanks to an Xbox First Look event. Here’s what we know.

Xbox announced an event centered on a highly anticipated entry in a cult-favorite series. Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 will take place with 4A Games & Deep Silver as a digital-only broadcast offering a world-premiere look at the next title in the beloved post-apocalyptic first-person shooter series. This will be the fourth mainline entry from 4A Games in the series based on the iconic novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, following Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro Exodus (2019).

I think the hunger for a horror shooter is high right now. We saw a lot of love for Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year. Recent refreshes of games like Silent Hill 2 or Dead Space clearly point to an enduring love for action-oriented experiences full of jump scares and creepy environments. A radioactive, horrific Moscow is a perfect place for that journey. While Exodus didn’t necessarily shake down the doors, a return to form for the Metro series could be huge for ensuring that this series’ fanbase endures.
