The world of Indie Movies is a relatively new experience for me. With the types of theaters I have in my area, the majority of films that I have been exposed to are big-budget ones that feature household names like Denzel Washington & Florence Pugh. This year, I have made quite an effort to see more indie films and broaden my horizons as to what filmmakers are capable of, especially when dealing with a razor-thin budget. A bit ago, I was contacted about a movie called Fluxx.
Having never heard of it, I did a bit of research to see where it had come from and what it was generally about. I quickly convinced myself that this is an indie worth taking a shot at and agreed to cover it. After mulling it over, perhaps for longer than I should have, I can safely say that Fluxx is phenomenal, and I hope that all of you will give it a chance! For the skeptics, let me explain why you should.

For those who don’t know, Fluxx is an indie film starring Shelley Hennig as a struggling actress named Vada who is attempting to escape her home and save her husband from mysterious entities who wish to harm them. Going back and forth between what is happening in the house and how the actress met her husband, pieces slowly begin to be revealed as to what has caused these entities to seek the couple out and the horrifying reality that will set them free. While some of this may seem a bit vague, that is for the good of all first-time watchers. I imagine there are plenty in the world who haven’t seen or heard of Fluxx, given the seemingly limited discussions about this film online.

Most of the cast in this are actors and actresses who are not household names. The only recognizable star is Tyrese Gibson, who plays a suave TV host and ex-boyfriend to Vada named Calvin Campbell. Despite this, every member of the principal cast has a great amount of work in their repertoire that, for the most part, shines within this film. Shelley Hennig truly carries this film and kept me interested in what would happen next in a way that a lesser actress wouldn’t have been able to.
While I don’t want to go into too many details about the film since it is very easy to spoil, there were certainly some scenes that I thought went to soap opera levels of overacting. Specifically, there is one party sequence where the overall production of the scene seemed a bit excessive. However, perhaps the filmmakers were trying to lean into the cheesiness of what may happen to a soap opera actress who falls into Vada’s situation.

While this film is labeled on iMDB as an Action Fantasy Horror film, I think it is easier to put this as a Fantasy film with horror and action elements. There are no significant parts of this film that scared me, and the action is very minimal. If I had to put a genre to this film beyond those labels, I would mark it as a Psychological Thriller or Psychological Mystery. This is because the questions that keep you going throughout the film only primarily change in terms of who the questions are aimed at.
Fluxx is definitely one of those movies that you should watch twice because it will better help you see the various breadcrumbs that lead to its final destination. My favorite breadcrumb of them all that I can talk about is the caller. This is an entity that interacts with Vada throughout the story and acts as a central point amongst all of the chaos. This entity is probably my favorite character as it is both a messenger of hope and a harbinger of the unknown.

Overall, I believe that Fluxx is a great film that is worth taking a look at. While the opening credits graphics are a bit jarring when put together with the movie as a whole, I encourage you to keep going and take a chance on this one. For a bit, this film had a chance of being in my top ten films of 2025, but a few recent entries may have pushed it into the honorable mentions. That is a discussion for another day, though.
