If you want to get Nintendo Switch news, you have an app for that. If you want to access things like your favorite in-game soundtracks and sounds, there’s an app for that, too, but it’s separate from the news app. Managing parental controls? It is also possible from a mobile app, but an entirely different one than the News and Music apps. Then, there’s the Nintendo Switch app, focused on online services and a growing number of features for Nintendo’s hit console. With the Switch 2 around the corner, we have an update that most players are going to be happy to see.
The major update to the Nintendo Switch mobile app regards transferring screenshots or videos from your Nintendo Switch 2 to your phone. On the original Switch, you would need to essentially email yourself the photos you screenshot or upload them directly to the social media apps available through the console. Now, users can access their screenshots on the Nintendo Switch mobile app, which will then be hosted for 60 days. Despite losing direct social uploading, this mimics the Xbox app, which is very seamless in accessing your on-console pics.
The additions to the Nintendo Switch app also include adding others to your friends list using Friend Codes. These are a clunky yet relatively effective way of adding people you know, which, despite not being the easiest process, cuts down on how many people try to become your friend for spam purposes. In a perfect world, I’d love to see something like Street Pass from the 3DS days return, but that might not happen outside of my wildest dreams.
While Nintendo is still a bit behind in online functionality and features, it is encouraging to see an update celebrated by fans after the Switch 2 User Agreement fiasco. Hopefully, this is a sign of more upcoming updates that help us connect to our friends and immerse ourselves in our favorite franchises more naturally. With less than a week to go until the launch of the Switch 2, let us know in the comments what updates you’d like to see in the future for the Nintendo Switch app.
