People are gearing up for the PS5 and Xbox Series X this holiday. As everyone looks to the future of console gaming, one can’t forget Nintendo’s highly successful home-handheld hybrid, the Switch. The Switch turns 3 today, and to be honest, a huge run of success doesn’t make the console’s current position any less weird and awkward.

The Switch is a bonafide hit. Nintendo’s latest has sold 50 million units worldwide, and games like Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons make it an all-around winner. Still, one can’t ignore the fact that after Animal Crossing drops this month, we’re set to see no major releases on the console for the rest of 2020. More announcements could be coming, but the best may be behind us as far as games go.
Once Nintendo puts out Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., a few Mario titles, and their relatively new international hit Animal Crossing, what’s left? We could still see Pikmin 4, a new Metroid Prime, and Bayonetta 3, but it’s all speculative at this point. Plus, rumors of a Switch Pro are leaving everyone wondering what it’d be worth buying a suped up Switch for no real heavy hitting games.

In my eyes, every minute of time with my Switch is a blast. I play it more than any other console. I can’t help but feel, however, that unless there’s a surprise in 2020’s back-half, we’re going to sort of look back on the console as a great start and a slow finish. Could we end up seeing Breath of the Wild 2 on this console? Sure. We’re just not sure when that might be. It wouldn’t surprise me if it launches with a Switch Pro. Yet still, nothing is certain.
