Short, sweet, and to the point – something I am not when talking about Football Manager. However, on Friday we got a short video overview of the upcoming training and tactical complexity that has been overhauled for Football Manager 27. Some of it can be very interesting. Which is odd for me to say, given I delegate team training and focus more on individual bits and pieces. As per usual, there is a blog post on the training and Tactical Effectiveness, sometimes going a little deeper than the video, which is also linked below as always.

Doing away with the pop-up of tiles and cards, training has major real estate on the navigation bar, with the “Overview” within that having a major portion of the screen taken up by your training calendar. Better still, you can once again copy-paste for week-to-week training if need be. However, as nice as this is, there is more to talk about than just maximizing training with a downloaded schedule set up by someone else.

Training is now broken up between squads for a more targeted effect. We’ll get more in-depth on that in a second, but your first team is set up now to focus on training for the match at hand, while the young boys you’ve trafficked in from South America, or in my case Japan, will be focused on player and team development. While the senior team focuses on the tactics of the upcoming match – say, a low block or playing from your build-up phase – the youth teams focus more on the overall play to improve their qualities.

As the blog post notes, “the biggest changes come under-the-hood,” because training is seemingly no longer plug-and-play for the most effective tactic that you’ve also downloaded. Yes, longer-term Football Manager players will have heard it all before: “you can no longer Gegenpress for 90 minutes.” However, I think with the new “Tactical Effectiveness” this might ring truer than before, even if it is in a slightly different way.

We previously saw in one of the deep dives that familiarity is gone in favor of “Complexity” and “Effectiveness.” To give an overview, Tactical Effectiveness is broken down into four separate bars: Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-in, and Next Match Info. If I may speculate a touch, the latter might play into your staff’s ability to inform you about the upcoming match details; something backed up by the Tactical Effectiveness submenu within the training tab. Meanwhile, the former two are either familiar or self-explanatory, but “Player Buy-In” focuses more on the support you have from players and the relationships between players and staff.

Now, with this Tactical Effectiveness having “Player Ability” and the “Tactical Understanding” hanging over it, it seems that Gegenpressing is no longer the meta for 99% of leagues. The complexity and player ability will seemingly limit your tactical variety, meaning the 8th tier of the English pyramid can no longer play Catenaccio followed by quick, fluid counter-attacking. Player ability and their desire to buy into it might be limited, as might your success.

What I did find interesting from the blog post was the line: “In time, you’ll develop a system that becomes synonymous with you and your philosophy, which in turn will feel more consequential to the world you’re managing in.” If we’re reading this correctly and it is aimed at those of us who play proper long-term saves, it may mean our single tactic with “the best defensive record in the league” could eventually break down due to other managers eventually understanding our philosophies more. Of course, the more complex the tactic, the longer it will take for them to break it down and understand it.

That’s not all, though, as it was kind of glossed over and not shouted about as much as I think many of us would like it to be, but “whether you’re in the lower leagues or preparing for the FIFA World Cup, you’ve now got more impactful, easier-to-access tools to mould your squad into a team of winners.“ Indeed, you’ll now get to work on your tactical approach from the training ground during international management. Many F’s before side-stepping the swear word to say “finally,” that’s what those who play international management have wanted forever. Myself included.

Sure, the Match Day Atmosphere deep dive and the next one, “with improvements to our Manager Creator tool,” probably aren’t inspiring a great amount of “I must play this now.” However, with each of the deep dives for Football Manager 27 thus far, I’m getting more and more excited as we head to November 10th and get closer to that Launch Preview “1-2 weeks before the street date.” With the next one on management creation, it is less likely we’ll have to shout from the rooftops.
