Kingdom Hearts IV Trailer Reveals Release Window

As a Kingdom Hearts fan, I’ve been waiting for a while for more news about Kingdom Hearts IV. Over the weekend, as part of the D23 Fan Event 2026, Square Enix and Disney released a new trailer. Because of the trailer, we also got a surprising set of announcements.

First off, the trailer revealed a new world for KH IV, based around the Disney film Coco. The footage that was shown was gorgeous, and showed a few other bits of gameplay, as well as a new keyblade for Sora.

In addition to this, the trailer revealed that Kingdom Hearts IV will release in late 2027 across all of its platforms. It will be coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The more surprising announcement was that we will be getting a Kingdom Hearts anime, which will be released on Disney+. We don’t have a release date yet. However, it is said to be a reimagining of the Kingdom Hearts adventure with a brand-new story that expands the universe while still celebrating it.

As a fan of Kingdom Hearts, I’m a little concerned about something reimagining it, as the story is already complex enough. There is a reason that people joke about Kingdom Hearts’ story being nonsensical. It requires a lot of investment, and that is going to be difficult to adapt into an anime format.

My biggest point of excitement from the weekend’s announcements still has to be the Kingdom Hearts IV trailer. Not only is Coco a beautiful world with a perfect theming for the upcoming story, but the release window really sets 2027 up to be big.

We’ll get Final Fantasy VII Revelation in the middle of 2027, and then KH IV toward the end. Putting it mildly, 2027 is shaping up to be a big year for KH fans. Hopefully we’ll see more either at Gamescom or The Game Awards. Until then, put your KH IV theories in the comments below!
