If you’ve been around for a little while, you’ll know I hate playing games with people. It is not the game’s fault; it is the fact that I hate people. Yet some co-op-focused games still interest me from time to time, including one that was just announced about a minute ago. Goose Byte Games, the developers behind the upcoming open-world survival crafting game, The Signal: Stranded on Sirenis, and publisher Balor Games today announced a co-op-focused kitchen escape game about sponges. Here is what the press release had to say:

Today, Goose Byte Games and Balor Games are weirdly proud to reveal Sponge Break, a chaotic 1-4 player co-op rafting adventure. Sponge Break transforms players into sponges escaping the tyranny of the kitchen sink on a raft held together by little more than wishful thinking. The game features drop-in co-op, full solo support, proximity voice chat with sponges that lip-sync to players’ voices[,] and physics-driven raft traversal where one mistake can flip the raft, scattering gear, dealing damage[,] and quickly ending the team’s escape.

In Sponge Break, the rules are simple: you’re a sponge. You’re on a raft. The river is trying to destroy you. Chaos everywhere. You and up to 3 friends are trying to escape, crammed onto a raft and armed with your trusty plunger-hook. Use proximity voice chat to work together (or don’t), steering the raft together down the rapids to freedom. Solve puzzles to open pathways, navigate environmental dangers, avoid being set on fire[,] and fight beavers… yes: beavers.”

As I said earlier, I’m typically not one for these types of “fun with friends” games because I’ll swear and take charge, barking orders. Indeed, Captain Fun of the USS Boring here. Yet Sponge Break‘s idea looks and sounds great. However, you don’t have to take my word for it. Starting today, you can sign up for the Sponge Break closed beta playtest starting later this month, with invites rolling out through the 28th of July. You can sign up here for that.

As you might guess, Sponge Break doesn’t have a release date set quite yet, but you’ll be able to wishlist it on Steam (hopefully) now. I’m excited to see more from Sponge Break, and hopefully, we don’t have to wait too long for a release date.
