Released in 2010 and removed from sale nine years later, Poker Night at the Inventory felt like a game everyone with a Steam account owned. Utilizing characters from the Sam & Max, Homestar Runner, Penny Arcade, and Team Fortress franchises, this Telltale Games title is back in a fresh remaster from Skunkape Games and is bringing the action to consoles as well as PC. In short, I can’t believe that after playing this game for hours back in the 2010s, I’m doing the same thing in 2026 with a smile on my face. Here’s my review of Poker Night at the Inventory for Nintendo Switch.

Poker Night at the Inventory is a Texas Hold’em showdown with the player and four iconic characters: Max, Strong Bad, Tycho, and The Heavy. As you play rounds of Hold’em, the four characters banter, attempt to bluff, and make quips and comments that enhance the regular poker experience. From time to time, a player will put up a collectible item in place of cash, providing a fun incentive to really play your cards correctly during those matchups.

It’s going to sound disparaging, but that’s really what this game has to offer. What makes it so wonderful, though, is the simplicity that provides clear game mechanics with such vibrant characters. Each video game character at your table has their own disposition, making them a bit more stoic or erratic, and even in some cases, willing to play a certain strategy or not. For the remaster, Skunkape Games, a small collection of former Telltale employees, really brought this game to a better resolution without sacrificing the nostalgia of the game.

You can track everything in this game, from games won and lost to the amount of money you’ve earned, or sacrificed, in pursuit of poker greatness. The games run smoothly, you can choose if you want more or less banter while you play, and there’s essentially endless card-playing fun to be had here. I really only have one minor complaint. When you fold and fast-forward to the end of the hand, there is one minor disappointment that persists, which is not being able to see which hand won to compare to the hand you threw away. As I said, it’s minor, but still a bit of a bummer.

At $10 USD, Poker Night at the Inventory is an easy, no-brainer pick-up for fans of the original. For poker fans or casual gamers who love fun characters and laid-back experiences, I’d also say it’s worth grabbing this title. Skunkape Games does wonderful work, and I really loved their recent refresh of Sam and Max: Beyond Time and SpaceI can imagine Poker Night at the Inventory will continue to be a go-to on my Switch when I’m in between games or looking for a quick, fun experience.
