The Astronauts’ dark-fantasy shooter Witchfire released earlier this year to a “Very Positive” rating in Early Access. I haven’t really checked it out yet, since I know that I’ll want to see it in its full release form. However, this new update happens to come at a surprising sales milestone for Witchfire.
That’s right, Witchfire has sold over 500,000 copies since it entered into Early Access. It also just received its first Melee weapons as part of“The Reckoning” Update. Here is what the press release has to say about the update and milestone:
“Witchfire, the single-player, dark fantasy RPG shooter from The Astronauts, has released The Reckoning, a major new content update featuring the game’s first melee weapons, new mini-bosses, gameplay modifiers, Steam Deck verification and accessibility features, including an arachnophobia filter. The studio has also revealed that the game has officially surpassed more than 500,000 sales since its Early Access launch.
The Reckoning evolves Witchfire’s combat beyond pure gunplay with the introduction of four new melee weapons, including a morgenstern, katar, and shield. Providing players with powerful alternatives to the default fist, each offers unique abilities or utility that witch hunters can seamlessly weave into their gunplay.

Complementing the melee lineup are three new firearms, including a highly requested triple-barrel shotgun. Encouraging a run-and-gun playstyle, the Tribunal lets players dash or slide to charge upcoming shots, while charged overkills unleash a devastating shock explosion on enemies. Combined with the arsenal of brutal melee weaponry, players can now fluidly blend close-quarters aggression with ranged lethality and spell-slinging.
To hone your skills, a shooting range featuring an interactive bestiary has been added. Providing the perfect laboratory for experimentation, it will allow players to pit their loadouts against already conquered enemies before venturing into expeditions.

Now fully verified on Steam Deck, accessibility options include font size adjustments and an arachnophobia filter, just in time for a new, spider-themed calamity – a powerful, cursed event from the witch’s arsenal. Finally, extraction from expeditions has been fully reworked, and two new gameplay modifiers have been added to challenge even the most experienced witch hunter. A full list of changes and fixes can be found in the Steam patch notes or on The Astronauts’ website.”
Witchfire is an RPG shooter from the minds behind Painkiller, Bulletstorm, and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Witchfire has Rogue-lite progression, along with Soulslike difficulty blending tough fights with consistent upgrades. I’m curious to see how Witchfire progresses over time, and I’m happy that the developers are dedicated to adding accessibility options into the game as they progress with development. Congratulations to The Astronauts on the new sales milestone, as well as the new major update.
