The Legend of Zelda is near and dear to a lot of gamers, and ever since the NES days, few characters have made such an impact. Enter a Twitter debate, the choice medium for arguing with total strangers. Those who came late thought trending topics like Twilight Princess and Legend of Zelda meant a new game or port was coming. Instead, they found memes and arguments for which of Link’s adventures is best.
Two games showed up more than any other titles in the Zelda library: Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time. The latest game, Breath of the Wild also ended up in a lot of top positions, and as one Twitter user, The Liberty Doll, aptly put it, “my top is def Ocarina of Time. It’s weird to say a video game changed my life, but it did & I met so many new people because of it. BotW was like rediscovering OoT as an adult. So good.”
Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask came out of the same console cycle and engine, so it makes sense that both would end up highly on many lists. The thing that made those games so impactful was the sheer magnitude of seeing and playing them for the first time. In many ways, Breath of the Wild mirrored that gravity. One Twitter user, hilariously named “Announce the N64 Mini Cowards,” noted the enjoyment a specific Zelda title brought him, stating a routine including “loading up and starting a new save file in The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker for the 1000th time as a form of self care.”
The Legend of Zelda games are a titan of gaming prowess, inventiveness, and clearly, deep emotional connection. Explore the various tweets yourself, but I think it’s worth noting that one game was severely undermentioned over the course of the day: A Link Between Worlds. Sure, the game was a spiritual successor to the far more popular Link to the Past, but if you missed that one, consider this your homework for the next few weeks.
