By 2026, we have seen all sorts of public apologies via social media. Corporations, influencers, companies of all sorts have sought to clear their name through these means, to varying response from consumers. With recent reports from Gamescom 2026 of stolen hardware, worse than the monetary loss of these devices, the developers who lost their hardware risk the early builds and insider information stored on these devices. This was no isolated incident either, with it taking place several times over the course of the week. The event took to their social media to update the public, several days after the first report of theft.

“We are aware of stolen hardware and take these reports very seriously and understand the frustration of affected exhibitors. … Uniformed guards provide general security across the venue. Individual stand security can be booked separately, and exhibitors are advised to insure equipment against theft. This is noted in the terms and conditions of participation and the technical guidelines. … Because security has one of the highest priorities to us as an event and to see that indie developers are affected makes us very sad. At an event of this size, however, there will always be individuals attempting to take advantage of the situation. Our security measures are designed to minimize such risks as effectively as possible.”
The statement notes that security is a high priority, but reports from Gamescom 2025 indicate that the security staff, sourced from private companies, was comprised of several individuals not having knowledge of the native language, utilizing undeclared work, or abusing social benefits. With a murky track record and the troubling reports emerging from Gamescom 2026, this statement is met with serious backlash from the public, as there is no semblance of remorse or an apology. Instead, it directs to “read the terms and conditions” and does not indicate how this will be addressed in the future. Here’s hoping Gamescom 2027 isn’t a repeat offense.
