Not only was last Friday Pokémon Day, but it also marked the franchise’s 30th anniversary. During the Pokémon Presents digital showcase, Game Freak revealed numerous updates for current titles as well as teasers for upcoming projects.

The showcase kicked off with a reveal for the Pokémon Red and Blue Music Collection, which releases the legendary soundtrack in a series of fun Gameboy inspired cartridge cassettes. These can then be played through the special Gameboy Jukebox, which goes on sale later today. It’s quite humorous to see what is essentially an MP3 player release in 2026, but I’m glad to see The Pokémon Company finally making the music for the games commercially available through legitimate means. I hope they continue to do so in the future.

Next came some updates regarding the Pokémon World Championship, which will be held this year in San Fransciso. Alongside this came a teaser for 30th anniversary products coming to the Pokémon TCG. This trailer was quite vague, but it looked to tease a new card type in the same vein as EX Pokémon or many variations of the mechanic.

The focus then shifted toward the various free-to-play and mobile titles. Pokémon Masters EX will add three new characters. The protagonists from Scarlet and Violet, Florian and Juliana, join the battle paired with Ogerpon and Terapagos, respectively. Additionally, a special variant of the generation one protagonist, Red, pairs him with Pikachu in the classic 1996 watercolor style. Players who log in now will also receive a bonus gift of 3,000 gems in celebration of the 30th anniversary and the 6.5-year anniversary of Pokémon Masters.

Pokémon Unite will see the addition of the legendary bird trio Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos, as well as the Johto starters Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr as playable characters. Meanwhile, Pokémon GO! will host an event from March 7th to 9th in which many rare Pokémon will appear. Additionally, a Kalos-themed tour event will start tomorrow and continue until March 1st, giving players the chance to capture many Generation 6 Pokémon. The Pokémon TCG Pocket app will also be hosting a celebration event, giving players a free 10 booster packs over the next 30 days, as well as login bonuses that can be used to open even more packs.  New missions themed around the mythical Pokémon, Mew, will be coming to users of Pokémon Sleep later today. Lastly, Pokémon Café Mix will be running an anniversary celebration featuring all 27 starter Pokémon as well as themed decorations and outfits for many others.

In terms of upcoming paid releases, there were some exciting developments. March will see the re-release of an all-time classic Pokémon XD- Gale of Darkness on the Nintendo Switch 2 for download with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. This game has become notoriously expensive to own physically, so I’m glad to see it finally become available on modern platforms again. Alongside this comes a port for Fire Red and Leaf Green, which come to Nintendo Switch today.

Pokémon Champions, the highly anticipated battle simulator, finally received a release date for April of this year, while Mega Garchomp Z will be added to the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends Z-A later today. Pokémon Pokopia will be releasing next week on March 5th, and the new trailer showcased some upcoming features like multiplayer and characters like the DJ Rotom and Chef Dente the Greedent. Those who preorder the game will receive a special Ditto rug as a bonus

The biggest and by far the highlight of the showcase was the announcement of Pokémon Winds and Waves releasing in 2027. This is the next mainline series game and will feature a region inspired by Southeast Asia with multiple islands and biomes to explore. The trailer also gives a look at the three starter Pokémon Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua. For the first time in a while, I like all three of these choices and am looking forward to seeing how they evolve in the future.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
