It has been some time since I played Cult of the Lamb. I took a break after I finished off the original series on my Nintendo Switch, and while I played it a little bit on PC afterward, I stopped playing to prevent burnout when I heard new DLC was coming. Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven not only provides a tougher experience, but it also polishes a lot of things and fleshes out Cult of the Lamb’s gameplay in ways I didn’t expect.
I’m not going to go too deep into the lore or plot of Woolhaven here, but essentially, Woolhaven is an expansion that builds upon the story and gameplay. Ideally, you’ll play it after you have finished the main game or have at least gotten close to the end of the main story. You will awaken Yngya, a goddess who once took care of and sheltered the lambs and creatures on the mountain.
It has been a long time since she was awake, and not only has something new taken root within the mountain, but wolves have begun to see the Mountain as theirs. As the last Lamb, you will have to help Yngya restore her power… but can you undo the sins of the past?
Plot elements aside, the main elements that you’ll want to focus on in Woolhaven are the Winter that comes as you awaken Yngya, and new mechanics such as Ranching. You’ll have to make sure you prevent your followers from freezing, so managing their warmth will be something else you’ll have to handle.

Wool becomes a new currency, which is mostly found through ranching. By raising creatures such as Llamas, Cows, and Yaks, you’ll be able to gain Wool that can help you get things from new Woolhaven merchants (I’m being vague to prevent spoilers). Additionally, Wool can be used to help craft new robes for your followers that look all kinds of cozy.
Other elements will be added over time (such as blizzards) that you’ll have to contend with. This actually puts more of an emphasis on the cozy, cult-building elements of the game, which is nice. When I put the game down a while ago, it was mostly because I felt fatigue from the combat loop, so I wanted more of the cozy side of things. Woolhaven provides that in spades, plus it adds plenty of twists to dungeoneering that make the game feel fresh.

There is a lot to discover in Woolhaven, and while I have already mentioned a few things, you can unlock new weapons, follower forms, Doctrines, buildings, decorations, Tarot cards, curses, relics, and more. On top of that, there are new NPCs and quest lines which will delve into not just Yngya’s story, but the story of the mountain, the lamb’s brethren, and more.
As a DLC expansion, Massive Monster has done an excellent job with Woolhaven. In fact, to some degree, I would say that Woolhaven is as big as the main game, so it almost feels like a whole new experience. If you set Cult of the Lamb down as I did, I encourage you to come back to it; this is absolutely worth it. If you haven’t played Cult of the Lamb before, it is an even bigger, more elaborate experience now. Don’t sleep on Woolhaven; it is a fantastic DLC. Just make sure you play a good bit of the main game before you add Winter into the mix.
