I have been following News Tower since it entered Early Access in February 2024. The 1930s-era news simulator caught my attention, and it has since grown and expanded. Now, you can play News Tower in its full vision, with everything the developers intended for its full release.

That’s right, News Tower is in full 1.0 as of yesterday, November 18th. It was crafted by Sparrow Night, a studio out of Rotterdam. It also boasts a live jazz soundtrack, pulling you back into the 1930s and its editorial rooms filled with typewriters and the scent of printing newspapers. Here is what the press release says about the launch and its accompanying update.

“Stop the presses! Sparrow Night and Twin Sails Interactive today proudly announce the 1.0 launch of News Tower, the 1930s newsroom tycoon game where players rise from a humble neighborhood gazette to a media powerhouse dominating New York City’s newsstands.

Now available on Steam, News Tower invites players to master every layer of newspaper production, from printing floors and darkrooms to editorial judgement, political influence, and fierce circulation battles. To celebrate [the] launch, News Tower is discounted 20% until December 2. Experience the golden age of journalism and decide what truth is worth printing.

Crafted by Rotterdam’s five-person indie studio Sparrow Night and powered by a live-recorded jazz soundtrack, News Tower transports players to an era of typewriters, flashbulbs, and smelly editorial rooms. The original score, recorded with members of the New Cool Collective, channels the energy of Count Basie and Duke Ellington to recreate the pulse of a deadline-driven newsroom.

News Tower has already earned a large array of critical praise, including four wins at the Dutch Game Awards and recognition from The New York Times as ‘2024’s most fascinating management simulation.’

News Tower blends classic tycoon depth with a richly atmospheric 1930s newsroom fantasy, challenging players to:

  • Run a full production pipeline, including printers, darkrooms, pneumatic tubes, supplies delivery, and more
  • Build your dream media HQ by hiring editors, reporters, copywriters, ad sellers, janitors, and lawyers
  • Shape your papers’ editorial line by choosing story leads, from integrity-first reporting to sensational front-page drama, to appeal to different kinds of readership and advertisers
  • Navigate influence and competing attention from the Mayor’s office, the Mafia, High Society, and the Military. Remember, you can’t please them all.

  • Rise from a scrappy start in Brooklyn to a skyscraper empire stretching through Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx, and beyond, fighting rival papers for control of New York’s readers.
  • Every edition, every hire, every favor, every scandal. Your newsroom’s reputation and survival hang in the balance. Integrity or influence? Objectivism or sensationalism? Build a legacy or break one.

This update also brings News Tower’s largest expansion of content to date, adding things such as a new faction (the Military) with its own ethical dilemmas and missions to deal with. That also comes with updated faction quests for existing factions, reputation systems, new narrative paths, buildings, decorations, and city districts.

With new city districts also come turf clashes and competition with other newspapers, causing you to need to compete for your district control. Other additions also include a revamped readership system and editorial perception, late-game expansion options, and more.

Overall, I’m eager to check out News Tower now that it is out of Early Access. It looked like a lot of fun when it released in 2024 in Early Access, but now it really looks like the newspaper-building experience I had hoped for. Check it out now while it’s on sale, too. This is a good time to pick it up.
