The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release next April, and Nintendo unveiled the latest trailer during a special, brief Direct live event. Along with a look at the new film, we received casting confirmations for two major characters who will appear in the upcoming movie. Princess Rosalina and Bowser Jr. are confirmed to be a major part of the next entry, and from their voice actors to additional looks at how their stories will intertwine with our favorite plumbers, here’s what we learned from the November 12 The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct.

Miyamoto, Mario’s creator, opened The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct, inviting fans to watch the newest trailer. He noted that the response to the move into space from the initial teaser was very positive before throwing it over to Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination. The executive shared that many characters featured in this film will be appearing on-screen for the first time. Finally, we got to see the trailer.

To open, we’re in Bowser’s Castle while he frantically paints, only to find it’s a mini castle within the Mushroom Kingdom. It appears Bowser is nice now, and he’s excited to present Mario and Luigi with a painting he created for Princess Peach. Once Mario gives him negative feedback, we finally see that he hasn’t changed at all, as he continues to threaten and yell at the brothers. Similar to the beginning of Super Mario Galaxywe see shooting stars at night, and then Mario, Peach, and Toad are able to head into the sky via a launch star.

Next, Bowser Jr. is revealed as the movie’s main villain and attempts to rescue his father. Finally, Rosalina is seen during an attempted kidnapping, absolutely destroying a giant robot out to capture her. In addition to the returning cast, we learned of two new castings. Academy Award-winner Brie Larson will play Princess Rosalina. Jack Black then showed up to interrupt Chris Meledandri and announced that Benny Safdie will play Bowser Jr. It’s pretty funny to me that we’re getting the Uncut Gems director in the Mario film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct was short and sweet, but the film looks incredible. From the sound of it, the movie is nearing its completion, but fans will need to wait until April 2026 to head to a theater and see it for themselves. You can watch the full Direct below, and be sure to let us know in the comments if you’re excited about the upcoming film!
