The Nintendo Switch 2 is currently enjoying the largest console launch of all time, and even so, Nintendo is raising its expectations. In its latest financial update, Nintendo reported that the first six months of the Nintendo Switch 2’s lifecycle have yielded 10.36 million units sold, the largest number of any console in its first half-year of sales. Here’s a full rundown of the insights we can gleem from Nintendo’s latest sales data.

According to Nintendo’s latest financial results, the company is raising its forecast for the number of consoles it will sell by the end of its fiscal year, which closes in March 2026. The company expects console sales of the new Nintendo Switch 2 to surpass 19 million units by the end of the fiscal year. To date, 9.57 million copies of Mario Kart World, have been sold, with 8.1 million occurring as the bundled game from the Switch 2’s launch.
Other games have fared well also, including 3.49 million units sold of Donkey Kong Bananza, and 1.16 million copies of the upgraded Nintendo Switch 2 version of Super Mario Party Jamboree. We don’t have sales data for Pokémon Legends: Z-A yet, but judging by how well Nintendo software is selling, I’d be surprised if it’s not at least on par with past games in the franchise. Software like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to sell well, indicating that Switch 2 owners are still purchasing releases from the last console’s lifespan.

We can’t knock Nintendo’s success by any means, but this is a lesson in supply strategy for any console maker. Nintendo held off on releasing its console until it could produce enough Switch 2s to sustain what it considered a successful launch. While its performance outpaces the PS5, we do know part of Sony’s struggle at the time stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic. A consistent strategy in any consumer business is providing enough of something for everyone to have one if they want it. While it may be easier said than done, it is clear that Nintendo’s wait to launch the console paid off.
