It feels like every game nowadays has some blend of genres. You have card-collecting Rogue-likes and action RPGs, but rarely have I seen a minigame genre blend so seamlessly with another genre. That’s where Cauldron seems to have found its place in the gaming collective consciousness, blending familiar things like upgrade trees and turn-based battles with minigames. It’s been a popular title on Steam for a few months now, and the solo dev behind the game is now launching Cauldron on Nintendo Switch to reach a whole new audience of players. Here’s what you need to know about Cauldron.

Cauldron is a mini-game focused turn-based RPG that takes players through a mysterious world with a young witch named Nyx. With her pink ghost sidekick, Blinkie, you play minigames to gain strength, uncover more areas in the map, and even more minigames themselves. There are over 20 heroes to add to your party that have unique skill trees. The art style is really great, leaning heavily into pixel art and a wide array of colors. PC players have been fans of Cauldron since its release, and its addition to the Nintendo Switch library is a welcome one given how many gamers love a good upgrade loop.

Some of the quirks that make Cauldron unique are why I think it’s resonated with so many players. For starters, a chain of things to collect, unlock, and upgrade hits that part of our brain that loves progress and achievement.

There’s also a level of gameplay automation that makes the game play itself for you, including auto-battling and auto-gathering for resources. You can play the game in a few modes as well, including idle, pacifist, and evil, which delineate what sort of experience you’ll have. As more and more folks seem to gravitate towards games that you can make work for you, this level of customization is hugely appealing.
