I think I might get a funny look from someone for saying what I’m about to, but since seeing Andrei Chernyshow’s Silly Polly Beast, there is part of me that’s thought “That’s very Suda51.” Maybe it is the young woman in the basement of Edward Scissorhands, pointing a gun at a dark timeline Pokémon that gives me that vibe, or it is the genre-bending gameplay in trailers and screenshots. From side-scrolling to top-down gameplay, some puzzles by the looks of it, and a little bit of skateboarding, there is a lot to talk about.
“Silly Polly Beast is a genre-bending, narrative shooter with aggressive, fast-paced gunfights and terrifying, otherworldly survival horror elements. It follows perpetually unlucky Polly’s descent into the underworld, having just escaped a nightmarish orphanage,” notes the press release. It continues, “Explore eerie realms, confront haunting figures from your past, and fight for your freedom. Will you escape, or will you be claimed by the demons?”
However, I’m clearly not talking about Silly Polly Beast for no reason; I’ve got an agenda. Announced yesterday, Top Hat Studios, Inc. and Andrei Cheryshow’s Silly Polly Beast will be releasing worldwide on PS4 and PS5, “the Xbox family,” and of course, Steam on October 28th, 11 AM EST, 8 AM PST, and for those of us who time-travel, 15:00 UTC.
The press release continues, “In Silly Polly Beast, you’ll traverse the nightmarish and often abstract depth of the underworld. Traversing through the dreaded fog, you’ll engage in aggressive gun fights, outsmart enemies, sneak in the shadows, solve puzzles, work with unlikely allies, and travel with your trusty skateboard. The underworld is filled with many odd figures – some of which may not be on your side, but not necessarily against you. Along the way, no matter what events may unfold, never forget the pact you made[,] which plunged you into this abyss.
Silly Polly Beast features a truly unique gameplay experience, blending fluid world exploration and puzzle[-]solving with perspective-shifting battles. As you traverse the world, Polly’s powers will grow deadlier – and separately, so will her skateboarding skills! As the narrative deepens, you’ll come across an eclectic blend of top[-]down and side-scrolling shooter segments, survival horror segments, and even skateboarding. Master forbidden spells and find the only thing left that matters to you – Alice.”
There is something Suda51-esque in Silly Polly Beast, but that’s part of the charm to me. To know there is still going to be that weird, abstract nonsense, albeit hopefully without the randy old man-ness of Suda’s use of young women. From its art style to its overall feel, there is something that reminds me of Suda51, but also something unique, which was what instantly put Silly Polly Beast on my wishlist. Again, Silly Polly Beast is set to release on October 28th for Steam, PS4/5, and Xbox Series X|S.
