The Shinobi franchise has always been a “fun, but hard” thing for me. I’m not great at it, but I enjoy the ride anyway. Now, with Shinobi: Art of Vengeance on the horizon, I’m more excited than ever to play Joe Musashi’s latest adventure.

Ahead of the August 29th launch date, developer Lizardcube has released a launch trailer to give players more information about what they can expect. Here is the premise of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance from the trailer’s description:

“In SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance, you’ll play as the legendary Shinobi Joe Musashi and discover your village burned to the ground and your clan turned to stone. You must set off on a quest for vengeance, ready to face an unparalleled evil to avenge your clan.

The press release provides a variety of information about the trailer as well, stating:

“The trailer showcases the upcoming 2D action platformer set in a stunning hand-drawn world created in collaboration with developer Lizardcube, the studio behind the acclaimed Streets of Rage 4. SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam[,] and Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2025.

Aspiring ninjas eager to jump into the fray can play the game now, three days before launch, with their purchase of the SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance Digital Deluxe Edition. By purchasing the Digital Deluxe Edition or pre-ordering the Limited Run Games SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance Collector’s Edition, players will also receive the SEGA Villains Stage DLC when it releases early 2026.

The action-packed stage will feature iconic SEGA characters[,] including the evil genius from the Sonic the Hedgehog™ series, Dr. Eggman, with more enemies to be announced in the future. A free demo featuring an enhanced version of the game’s first stage is available for download on all major platforms right now.”

I’m excited to see how Joe Musashi’s latest adventure turns out. While it is strange to get a Shinobi game and a Ninja Gaiden game at the same time of year, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance seems to set itself apart. Let’s hope fans of both series continue to receive great content from here on.
