Fair warning, folks: It might be hard for me to contain my excitement while remaining objective about this topic. Blizzard Entertainment has revealed a slew of new details about the upcoming World of Warcraft: Legion Remix event. Legion Remix has many similarities with the previous Mists of Pandaria Remix event. However, Blizzard took player feedback about Mists of Pandaria Remix into account and has made several significant changes and improvements to that formula for Legion Remix. I’ve prepared a rundown of everything that’s publicly known about World of Warcraft: Legion Remix as of this article’s publication.
Unlike Blizzard, I’m not going to make you wait for what I consider to be the most disappointing bit of this news roundup: At the time of writing, Blizzard still hasn’t announced when Legion Remix will start and end. Another disheartening note is that Blizzard has previously stated that special artifact weapon appearances from completing Mage Tower challenges in Legion will not be obtainable in Legion Remix. There has been a ton of outcry from players since Blizzard made that announcement, so there’s a chance (however slim it may be) that Blizzard might revert that decision before Legion Remix commences.
On to the more concrete details, then! Class-specific Order Halls were an integral part of Legion, and they’ll be returning in Legion Remix. However, players will not be required to collect Order Resources or send their champions on missions, many of which take certain amounts of real-time to complete. That change was presumably made because Legion Remix is supposed to be much faster-paced than normal WoW gameplay, and those missions would bring that pace grinding to a halt. I’m glad to see Class Halls will return, and I’m even happier to know I won’t have to bother with follower missions.
The other central part of Legion was each class specialization getting to acquire and wield legendary Artifact Weapons from Warcraft lore. All those Artifact Weapons will also be returning, albeit with a few major changes. All Artifact Weapons will share the same trees of upgraded traits in any of five fields: Fel, Holy Light, Nature, Arcane, and Storm. Players will be able to freely “mix and match” traits from all five fields, and players are “not locked in” to these traits because they can be changed at any time. There will also be jewelry pieces that can make these upgrades significantly stronger.
At the time of writing, there are a few notable things other than Legion Remix’s launch date that Blizzard hasn’t yet addressed. Since the Evoker class was added after Legion, it’s unclear if Evoker characters will have their own Artifact Weapons or Order Hall. Aside from Evokers, I’d imagine we can safely presume that every class playable up to Legion will have the same allotments of spells, abilities, and talent points that are available to them in “retail” WoW. Skyriding will be available to all Legion Remix characters (called “Timerunners”) by default. I’d imagine original “Steady Flight” will be available as well.
Legion Remix will have a new way for players to engage with non-instanced, “outdoor” content (i.e., everything except dungeons and raids) that was “inspired by Diablo’s World Tiers.” Players will be able to opt into something called “Heroic World Tier,” which purportedly makes all enemies vastly stronger and will make gameplay generally “much more challenging.” While you’re questing and exploring Legion zones, you’ll be able to find “Time Warp Obelisks.” Most of these give you powerful buffs when you interact them, while others will spawn powerful enemies that drop high-quality loot if you can defeat them in battle.
Legion was the first expansion to feature Mythic+ difficulty dungeons and the keystones associated with them. Blizzard wants to “honor” that by introducing what they’re calling “Timeworn Keystone dungeons” within Legion Remix. Blizzard will be bringing back “most” of the original Mythic+ dungeon affixes from Legion for these, in addition to four new, Remix-exclusive affixes called “Eternus’ Trials.” Legion Remix players will be able to help the Infinite Dragonflight learn from the Legion timeline with new daily quests called “Infinite Research.” These appear to be virtually identical to daily “Worldsoul” quests in The War Within, but with some major twists.
Infinite Research quests will give players powerful rewards for completing quests whose objectives are likely things players were going to do anyway. These can include things like killing a certain number of demons, completing certain dungeons, and picking up different amounts of an event-specific currency called Bronze while you’re out exploring. Blizzard says there are “over a hundred” different Infinite Research quests players can get, and eventually, “you’ll unlock the ability to take on multiple at once.” Taking multiple Infinite Research quests may allow players to “double-dip” by progressing on multiple research quests while doing a single dungeon, for example.
Speaking of Bronze, the currency that was exclusive to Mists of Pandaria Remix, it’ll be returning in Legion Remix. However, Blizzard has “heard player feedback” and changed Bronze into a currency that you can only spend on acquiring new cosmetics and mounts. Previously in Mists Remix, Bronze could be spent for that same reason as well as to upgrade your characters’ gear, which often forced players to make difficult choices about how to spend their limited Bronze. You’ll still frequently get more and more powerful gear, but at least now you won’t have to worry about spending Bronze to do so.
Instead, you can loot new gear from “any content. Harder content will have a higher chance to drop upgrades, but you can get upgrades from literally anywhere,” according to Blizzard. Now for one aspect of Remix that will appeal to players like me, who tend to go way overboard in terms of making tons of new characters for a Remix event. Blizzard will be adding five more character slots to all WoW accounts, which brings the maximum number of characters you can have on an account at one time to 70. There’s currently no word on when this change will be implemented, though.
Additionally, you can transfer Timerunning characters into The War Within before the end of Legion Remix, but “this is a one-way trip.” Blizzard has “taken inspiration from WoW Classic” when it comes to the content release schedule in Legion Remix. New content will be added to Legion Remix every two weeks, ranging from Patch 7.0 (Legion’s debut patch) all the way to Legion’s final patch that features Argus and the final raid of Legion. Blizzard added that “after all the phases are out, there still will be over a month towards the end where you’ll have plenty of time to binge all the content you desire.”
That’s great and all, but that knowledge would be even more exciting if Blizzard would hurry up and confirm when Legion Remix will be active instead of keeping the player base (myself included) anxiously waiting for more details. Putting that not-entirely-sarcastic remark aside, I’m extremely thrilled for Legion Remix. Legion was my favorite World of Warcraft expansion by far, and now I get to play through it several dozen more times with all the fantastic twists of a Remix event. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I need to go reserve several more character names ahead of time!
