Boomer shooters. Extraction shooters. Looter shooters. All concepts that have made for fun FPS games, but what if all of the above was the case? Enter Mycopunk, the first game from Pigeons at Play and with the backing of the acclaimed Devolver Digital as publisher. A co-op-centric experience that’s recently entered Early Access, it’s already jam-packed with content and is practically feature-complete from the start. So select your ridiculous robot, grab a goofball gun, and dive into the weirdest shooter of 2025 so far!
Mycopunk‘s best single word to describe it is “weird”. For fans of weird, that’s something applied across the board, not just an off-the-wall narrative cluster, but more so. There are obtuse visuals in color schemes that feel like they shouldn’t belong, yet manage to work and make it a visual feast as much as it is artistic vomit. Being an FPS, compelling visuals may distract those who don’t necessarily have the twitch-shooter level of focus. However, once the player gets used to it, it becomes a non-issue.
The enemies within Mycopunk are fungal freaks that all have a glowing weak spot under their orb-shaped shells. Some are simple foot-soldiers, and others are hulking behemoths that shoot gargantuan lasers at you, melting your health if you’re not using one of your movement abilities and getting bogged down by the sheer quantity of baddies. Hitting those weak spots amidst their massive tendrils and hardware that is actively pursuing you makes for a nice challenge and demands your focus, getting the best out of even the most weathered FPS diehards.
Each playable character within Mycopunk offers something unique in terms of survivability and versatility. While the Bruiser has a handy shield and a ground pound, which suits him for withstanding tons of enemies, the Scrapper’s jetpack/grapple point makes him easily maneuverable through swarms for a quick exit.
I found myself maining the glider, who could fly around the map in quick bursts at will and could heal teammates in tight pinches. With the game’s deep upgrade system, the various currencies picked up in every run can be used to unlock more guns, upgrade your specific character, weapons, grenades, and more, making the loot side of things in the game something to keep coming back to.
It truly was a blast jumping into random lobbies of Mycopunk during launch week, likely the game’s biggest boom period. There’s no guarantee that servers will keep up at this capacity down the road, but even playing with just one friend can make for a great time, and even some solo play if you’re up for the challenge. At a paltry $14.99 for a bug-free Early Access launch and with only six months estimated before the full launch, it’s easy to recommend Mycopunk for anyone looking for an oddball shooter with all the best pieces of modern FPS titles, and exclusions of microtransactions, cosmetics, and any fluff that forgoes the fun.
