Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to Get a Second Season

Video game adaptations are getting a lot better nowadays, thanks to the likes of Fallout on Amazon Prime and the Super Mario movie. In fact, there are even more video game anime than ever before, many of which are original projects backed by Netflix. Titles like Devil May Cry, Castlevania, and League of Legends have earned acclaim, shifting their worlds into new adventures for the anime medium.

One hugely successful series at Netflix, which followed this formula, is getting a second season. Cyberpunk: Edgerunner 2 was revealed at the recent anime expo, much to the joy of the millions of fans who loved the first season. Here’s what we know.

At Anime Expo in LA, CD PROJEKT RED announced the next season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In continued collaboration with anime studio TRIGGER, the series will be a new standalone adventure in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Kai Ikarashi will serve as director with continued involvement from season one director Hiroyuki Imaishi. The series will once again air on Netflix, which has proven to be one of the great original anime series on the streaming platform. The second season of Edgerunners was confirmed to be a standalone story from the first season, and other than the key art and title of the series, as well as some personnel on staff, we don’t know too much else at this point.

CD PROJEKT RED is quite busy these days. They’re in development with a Witcher remake, as well as the follow-up to the award-winning The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. They’re also working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and many multimedia projects, including the live-action Witcher series. There’s quite a rollercoaster ride awaiting fans of the studio, given how often projects tend to release to varying degrees of success and acclaim. Despite its messy launch, Cyberpunk 2077 became one of this generation’s defining games, mixing a great story along with captivating visuals that many are getting to play for the first time thanks to the Switch 2.
