Monday, Forgotten 23, and Ground of Aces are releasing this month. Tuesday, WoW has a special event this month, and Backyard Baseball ’01 got some features announced. Wednesday, Medieval Dynasty got a new update and some new DLC, Farm Sim 25 is heading to the best place in the known universe, Scotland, and Might and Magic got a new publisher. Thursday, Perfect Dark (and many other projects) got cancelled and studios closed, while Nexus Mods is set to comply with EU and UK laws, removing mods.
Moving on to the Epic Games Store, and I think we’ll start with the first of a back-to-back offering over the next couple of weeks, Figment. Released back in 2017 and developed by Bedtime Digital Games, Figment has you playing as Dusty in a weird and wonderful MC Escher-ish surrealist world full of music and strange puzzles. I fell in love with it instantly because I like weird things, but that’s what I get for enjoying new and interesting ways to tell weird and wonderful stories. Not world-beating, but enjoyable.
Figment is also the free game on the mobile version of the Epic Games Store this week. The storefront is only available worldwide on Android and only in the EU for iOS platforms.
Onto the second offering, and it is Backpack Hero, a Rogue-like/lite Resident Evil 4-style inventory management ’em up. Well, how else do you expect me to explain it? After selecting one of three characters, you adventure through a dungeon in turn-based combat with a meal, a weapon, and a shield, but will expand that as you explore and become more experienced. The placement of items and their adjacent counterparts is important to the overall success, with certain buffs for items that surround certain things, or the fact that helmets always need to be at the top.
Even if you’re not really a fan of inventory management, Backpack Hero might just be the Rogue-like/lite for you. With each character drastically changing how you play, there is lots to explore and enjoy with Backpack Hero this week, or maybe several weeks from now, once you’ve finished what you picked up during the Steam Summer Sale, which both David and I gave suggestions on. You only have until Monday to pick up things during the sale.
All this week, you can pick up Figment on the Epic Games Store for mobile and the Epic Games Store for PC, where you can also pick up Backpack Hero until the 10th of July. Moving on to next week, and it is another double bill, which, as I noted earlier, will continue on from Figment this week with Figment 2: Creed Valley. Of course, a sequel to the aforementioned Figment, everything is just a bit more from this 2023 title. The other option being Sky Racket, a side-scrolling Shmup crossed with a block-breaking sort of tennis thing, just in time for the Wimbledon final.
