Slow news week, eh? In the last week alone, I’ve written more than 23.6K, but I wasn’t the only one writing about Summer Game Fest, Day of the Devs, Access-Ability Summer Showcase, Wholesome Direct, Xbox Games Showcase, Southeast Asia Games Showcase, the PC Gaming Show (cue 1000 yard death stare), and the Future Games Show. Alexx also covered the Anima Remaster this week, and late last week, I covered the rather scant Prime Gaming for June.
Moving on to this week’s offerings on the Epic Games Store for PC, we’ll start with Two Point Hospital. Originally released for PC back in 2018 and developed by Bullfrog alumni, Mark Webley and Gary Carr. Webley previously worked on Black & White, as Carr worked on Populous II, Fable: The Journey, and even produced one of my favorites, The Movies. In particular, the two worked on Bullfrog’s greatest game, Theme Hospital. Two Point Hospital is a spiritual successor/sequel to the 1997 release under EA, but this time under Sega.
Like the 1997 release, Two Point Hospital is a bit humorous as you try to keep the “business” of health care (hi Luigi!) afloat. From curing Mock Star, Pan-demic, Animal Magnetism, and of course, Light-Headedness, there are a variety of ailments. There’s also Freddie cosplay, pans on heads, having animals clung to you, and of course, having such a bright idea to light up the whole room. As I said a few years ago in my console review, Two Point Hospital is everything Theme Hospital was with modern amenities and maybe a little blue fella on the arcade machines you can place.
Next, we move on to things I can be less excited about. On the Epic Games Store mobile app, you can pick up DC Heroes United, a single-player Rogue-lite with microtransactions. Right, now that I’ve gone and boxed 12 rounds with Mike Tyson to get the anger out about that statement, it is a freemium thing with DC theming and alright art direction spoiled by the billions that Warner has lost in the past few years. Downloading through Epic will get you 1 million in-game credits, 1000 gems, 5 item keys, 10 hero keys, 50 level-up tokens because who likes progression these days, and 100 random blueprints. Oh, and a free Batman skin that looks like Funko got into cartoons.
The other free game on Epic’s mobile app this week is actually a game, a proper one too. Shapez is a simple, minimalistic factory-building game that was released in 2020 and has since gone on to spawn a sequel. If you’re the type of person who wishes you could play Factorio while on the toilet on your phone, then we’ve found the next reason you spend an hour taking a dump.
All this week, you can pick up Two Point Hospital on the Epic Games Store for PC, and you can go ahead and download the Epic mobile app globally on Android and iPhone/iPad in the EU to claim Shapez and DC Heroes United until the 19th of June. Moving on to next week, I can clear this one off my Steam Wishlist, The Operator. Starting your work at the FDI, you solve crimes using the “cutting-edge FDI software to dig for clues, solve puzzles, and uncover the truth.“
