In an increasingly digital age, storage space to store your digital downloads is less of a luxury and more of a necessity. When the Switch 2 reveal included details about the need for a MicroSD Express card for any external storage, gamers scrambled to figure out two things. First, what is a microSD Express card, and second, who makes them? While a few options were on the market, more are on the way from many companies ahead of the June 5th launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. PNY is launching their microSD Express options this week, with two models and plenty of data to back up how much faster these cards are than the traditional microSD option.

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, searches for the term “microSD Express” skyrocketed as people tried to figure out why the new Nintendo console required such a specific storage option. As it turns out, we know a bit more about the power of this newer form of storage thanks to a press release announcing PNY’s new lineup of microSD Express cards. The company explains that these new Express cards are up to 4.4x faster than standard UHS-I microSDs. Additionally, they boast speeds up to 890MB/s when reading and up to 750MB/s when writing to start gaming faster, enabling lightning-fast downloads and a smoother gaming experience.

PNY’s options for 128 GB and 256 GB match those of companies like Sandisk and Samsung, which are also producing cards for the Nintendo Switch 2. With games like Mario Kart World taking up 23.4 GB of space, that will add up fast for players on the new Nintendo console. Especially with games like Tears of the Kingdom and Kirby and the Forgotten Land getting updates, that will leave many players wanting to revisit these titles for the upgraded performance. Inventory will be tight for many Nintendo Switch 2-capable accessories, but PNY is selling their option for microSD Express cards now, so you can beat the June 5 rush. Let us know in the comments if you plan to pick up a microSD Express card at launch or if you’ll wait it out!
