I’ve recently said that we’re in the age of remakes/remasters, and I think that’s true. The late ’80s and early ’90s were a golden age of platformers. RPGs and the early 3D platformers took the late ’90s, and if you are old enough for that early to mid-2000s era, then “extreme sports” were all the rage of the PS2. Including Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure. The progenitor of which is easily the whole Tony Hawk’s series, which for many is loved not just for the Pro Skater series but also the Underground/American Wasteland era.
According to Kyle Gratton of Screen Rant, Tony himself wants to see the remasters continue beyond THPS 3 + 4 later this July. When asked about the THUG series and if there was an aspiration for a remaster of that series, maybe even just the first game, Hawk said, “I always have aspirations,” though he goes on to say, “It’s not up to me generally. I’ll campaign all I can, but I’m working with a much bigger company that’s a lot smarter than me.” Come on, Tony, I’ll give you the programmers and artists, but the suits?
I won’t say he’s cagey when asked further questions about it here from Screen Rant, but when asked if there have even been discussions about whether THPS 3 + 4 does well, will Underground be next, Hawk said, “Yeah, we haven’t even released this game.” So, though the Birdman himself would like to see further remasters, it could all very well be up to the whims of an executive at Activision-Blizzard |King under Xbox. It goes almost without saying that after my love of THPS 1 + 2 back in 2020 and my excitement for 3 + 4, I’d love Underground to be remastered, even if it’s one game at a time.
Less “restricted” than the original Pro Skater releases, my stupid little child brain loved just skating about the levels of Underground. Including “New Jersey” (the most attractive New Jersey has looked in games), “Tampa,” “Vancouver,” “San Diego,” “Hawaii,” “Manhattan,” and of course “Hotter Than Hell,” which is just a Kiss concert. Thinking back on it now, even that seems a bit “old” in terms of music tastes for the younger audience that would go on to enjoy Paramore and My Chemical Romance a couple of years later.
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if this “aspiration” becomes some sort of fruition a couple of years from now. We’re just under two months away from the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, set to release on July 11th, 2025, for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Battle.net. Of course, I can’t wait to go back and play the last two Pro Skater games. If you lie and say there was a game in 2015, I’ll come to your house and angrily stare at you as you wake up.
